I was so excited when Netflix finally brought “Samurai Champloo” to us in North America back in January 2026! It’s a hilarious anime with samurai, aliens, and this amazing swordsman who just loves manga. And thankfully, they recently fixed a problem that was keeping people from really enjoying this incredible show – it’s seriously a classic from the early 2000s!
Outside of Japan, Netflix is one of the main places to watch the anime series Gintama. Fans on Reddit noticed that in March, Netflix added the first 26 episodes of Gintama Season 2 for viewers in the US, UK, and Canada. Since then, they’ve continued adding more episodes – including the rest of Season 2 (episodes 27-50) and the first 51 episodes of Season 3 as of July 15th.
Netflix Finally Fixes Gintama’s Missing English Subtitle Problem for Season 2
Most fans have been happy with how Netflix has gradually released the series. However, the first two seasons initially had a significant problem: English subtitles weren’t available. When Gintama Season 1 Part 1 launched in January 2026, viewers could choose between English and Japanese audio, but there were no English subtitles for the Japanese track.
Many fans of Gintama quickly noticed an error on Netflix. Surprisingly, the same problem happened again in May 2025 with Gintama Season 2 Part 2 (Episodes #27-50), leaving half of the season available with English subtitles and the other half without. Fortunately, Netflix has now fixed the issue.
The subtitle situation with Gintama remains tricky. As of July 2026, Season 3 only has one set of subtitles for both the Japanese and English audio tracks. This makes it seem like the subtitles are mostly based on what’s spoken in the English dub, though they do include translations of some text that appears on screen.
The original Gintama manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from December 2003 to June 2019. This popular sci-fi comedy takes place in a Japan resembling the Edo period, but with an alien occupation and a ban on samurai combat. The story mainly follows Gintoki Sakata, a quirky former samurai who runs a jack-of-all-trades business called “Yorozuya,” which literally means “We Do Everything.” Gintoki and his team will take on any job, big or small—from finding lost animals to hunting down criminals.
I’ve been following Gintama for a while now, and it’s incredible how popular it’s become! By November 2024, over 73 million copies of the manga had been sold around the world. Beyond that, there’s a ton of anime content – eight full seasons, four movies, and several special episodes. It’s really expanded its universe too; I remember when Tomohito Osaki teamed up with Sorachi to create Gintama: Mr Ginpachi’s Zany Class, which was a hilarious spin-off where Gintoki was reimagined as a totally indifferent high school teacher. That series started as a light novel back in February 2006, and it even got its own anime adaptation produced by Bandai Namco Pictures that aired from October to December 2025.
The first 23 volumes of the Gintama manga have been published in English by VIZ Media. Unfortunately, the side story collection Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class hasn’t been officially translated into English.
