Netflix drama based on big British story confirms release date with first look

A picture taken on the set of Jodie Whittaker’s upcoming British series, “Toxic Town,” has just been made public.

The Netflix miniseries in four parts is set to debut on February 27, featuring Jodie Whittaker, known for her role as Doctor Who, portraying Susan McIntyre – a character impacted by the Corby toxic waste incident.

The latest scene from the series showcases Whittaker embodying her character, joining an ensemble that additionally comprises Downton Abbey’s Brendan Coyle and The White Lotus’ Aimee Lou Wood.

In the UK, the incident is known as one of the largest environmental scandals, and it revolved around mothers from Corby seeking justice following a series of birth defects in 19 children. These unfortunate incidents were allegedly linked to inadequate cleanup procedures at substandard steelworks.

In 2009, it was determined that Corby Borough Council was responsible for negligence, public nuisance, and violating a legal obligation. This groundbreaking court case marked the first time anywhere that a connection between environmental toxic waste in the air and birth defects was legally established.

After a full year, the council openly acknowledged that they would no longer challenge the earlier ruling. They confessed to errors in their past cleanup operations at the old British Steel facility and reached a monetary agreement with the affected families.

The movie titled “Toxic Town” boasts a star-studded cast, including Rory Kinnear from “The Diplomat,” Robert Carlyle known for his role in “Trainspotting,” Claudia Jessie who has acted in “Bridgerton,” and Joe Dempsie and Michael Socha from the series “Showtrial.

The show centers around three women engaging in a long-term struggle against injustice, similar to David facing Goliath, as described by the series summary.

In simpler terms, Jack Thorne, the author of “Toxic Town”, expressed that the Corby toxic waste incident is a pivotal moment in history, demonstrating our capacity to disregard the safety of our citizens by choosing to turn a blind eye and deaf ear.

“It also showed the remarkable way that people will fight for what’s right.

The narrative in “Toxic Town” centers around these humorous, valiant, extraordinary women as they tirelessly fought for their children’s wellbeing amidst adversity.

It’s been an immense honor collaborating with Annabel [Jones], Minkie [Spiro], Delyth [Scudamore] and the entire Broke & Bones team on this extraordinary tale. We are deeply appreciative of Netflix for providing us with the chance and backing to share it.

Toxic Town premieres on Thursday, February 27, streaming on Netflix.
