Netflix Debuts Eerie First Trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein

At this year’s Tudum event, which was hosted by Netflix, we received an exciting update on the new adaptation of Frankenstein, directly from the creators of The Shape of Water.

According to Mary Shelley’s original tale, the latest film version of “Frankenstein” is penned and helmed by Guillermo del Toro. It takes place during the 19th century, with Oscar Isaac taking on the role of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi also appears in an undisclosed character. Despite numerous adaptations over the years, enthusiasts are eager to see how del Toro will put his unique spin on this classic horror story. A teaser from Tudum may offer more insights into what we can expect.

In my own words, I’d express it like this: “Toro is a true-life genius, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of the movie. Although I wasn’t present during the presentation, Toro, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth showcased the film. The trailer, with its chilling atmosphere, was unveiled, and you can watch it below.

Frankenstein Features a Star-Studded Cast

Apart from Isaac and Elordi, the cast for Frankenstein includes Christoph Waltz, known for his role in Django Unchained, Mia Goth who starred in MaXXXine, Christian Convery recognized from Sweet Tooth, Felix Kammerer best known for his work in All Quiet on the Western Front, Lars Mikkelsen, famous for his role in The Witcher, David Bradley, a veteran actor from Game of Thrones, Charles Dance also hailing from Game of Thrones, and Ralph Ineson, known for his part in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

My most beloved book is ‘Frankenstein’, and in 2010, del Toro said something to the effect that the monster in the story says, ‘I have a greater capacity for love than you might think. However, if I cannot evoke it, I will instead instill fear.’

Speaking at the 2018 BAFTAs after winning Best Director for The Shape of Water, he expressed that Mary Shelley, a young English woman, holds significant importance in his life, almost like family. In moments when he feels like giving up or doubts his dreams of filmmaking and storytelling, he remembers her as an inspiration.

It’s evident that Guillermo del Toro has a deep affection for the novel ‘Frankenstein’, and considering the recognition he’s earned from his past ventures, there’s considerable excitement for this filmmaker’s fresh take. Following 2022’s ‘Pinocchio’, this will be del Toro’s next directorial effort, a stop-motion musical adaptation of the renowned tale. His portfolio includes films such as ‘The Devil’s Backbone’, ‘Blade II’, ‘Pacific Rim’, ‘Crimson Peak’, and the first two ‘Hellboy’ movies. He’s also directed projects for Netflix, including the horror anthology series ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities’, which premiered in 2022, and he created the animated series ‘Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia’, along with its spin-offs.

Frankenstein will be released on Netflix in November.
