Netflix confirms Supacell season 2 is on the way

As a fan who has binged watched every superhero series out there, I can confidently say that Supacell is hands down one of the most unique and compelling shows to grace our screens in recent times. The first season was a refreshing take on the genre, with its relatable characters, gritty London backdrop, and the thought-provoking concept of superpowers being tied to sickle cell disease.

Netflix has renewed Supacell for a second season.

The highly popular superhero show made its premiere in June, focusing on five individuals residing in South London who have sickle cell disease; these individuals unanticipatedly acquire extraordinary abilities.

The streamer has made it known that season 2 is indeed forthcoming, posting a fresh poster across social media platforms bearing the phrase: “Here comes Supacell 2!”

Creator Rapman reacted to the news on his X (formerly Twitter) account, teasing: “Season 2 is going to be mad!! #Supacell2.”

The writer added in a statement: “I can’t wait for the world to see Supacell, season 2. For me season 1 was always an origin story. Season 2 is when the journey really begins. Season 1 was my Batman Begins, Season 2 is my Dark Knight.”

Earlier this past month, Rapman communicated with Digital Spy concerning the possibility of Season 2. During their conversation, he shared that he already has a plotline that extends up to Season 3.

Expanding on the theme of the series, Rapman shared: “I’ve always been drawn to the idea of a superpower show, but I didn’t want the source of power to be arbitrary, like a glittery stone hidden underground. Instead, it should stem from within a person. That’s why a bite is part of the narrative.”

As a person who has witnessed the struggles of living with sickle cell disease, I can attest to its harshness and unrelenting nature. It is a burden that one would gladly bear if it meant bestowing extraordinary abilities upon their child. The pain and hardships endured would pale in comparison to the joy and pride derived from seeing one’s offspring soar with unique talents and gifts. While no one wishes for such a difficult journey, the love for a child can provide the strength and resilience needed to ride the storm of this challenging disease.

1. “Seeing that was truly moving, as many are unaware of sickle cell disease. It helps spread knowledge and understanding. It inspires. Those who witness it can’t help but feel understood and realize the challenges involved.”

The cast of Supacell includes Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, and Eddie Marsan.

Supacell season one is streaming now on Netflix.
