Aaron Taylor-Johnson, known for his role in Kraven the Hunter, is joining the cast of the upcoming limited series Enigma Variations. This project represents a shift for Taylor-Johnson, who has mostly focused on film work recently, though he did appear in several British television shows earlier in his career.
Development on the series began in January 2025 with Jeremy Allen White of The Bear set to star. However, White left the project later that year, prompting Netflix to find a new lead actor. On Thursday, Netflix officially announced that Taylor-Johnson would be taking on the role.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Love Life Struggles in the Series
The series Enigma Variations is inspired by André Aciman’s novel, Call Me by Your Name. Alex Taylor-Johnson stars as Paul, a man whose life is profoundly changed by a decade of intense relationships. The show offers a deeply personal and expansive look at themes of identity, desire, and what it means to find lasting connection in a world full of possibilities.
The upcoming Netflix series is being produced by Media Res, the studio behind shows like The Morning Show and Pachinko. A.K. Shuman (The Wheel of Time, Carrie Soto Is Back) is writing and executive producing, and Oliver Hermanus (The History of Sound, Living) will direct. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer from Media Res, along with André Aciman and Monica Leinvson, are also executive producers.
Netflix Doubles Down on Romantic Dramas
Netflix is continuing to invest in romantic dramas, adding to its collection of popular shows like Bridgerton and Virgin River. The casting of Taylor-Johnson in Enigma Variations follows the announcement of a TV series based on the romance novel This Summer Will Be Different. Netflix likely hopes Enigma Variations will also become a hit, given the positive reception the book has received.
André Aciman is praised for his ability to capture the intense and exhilarating experience of falling in love. According to Michael Upchurch of The Boston Globe, no other writer portrays sexual infatuation quite like Aciman. Similarly, Paul Lisicky of The New York Times noted that Aciman’s writing about desire is so captivating, readers even miss it when it’s not present.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a familiar face in comic book adaptations, having starred in movies like Kick-Ass and Sony’s Kraven the Hunter. He’s also recently appeared in The Fall Guy, Nosferatu, and 28 Years Later. Looking ahead, he has several new films planned, including a reunion with director Robert Eggers for the historical horror movie Werwulf. There’s also been some talk that .
