Netflix bosses 'desperate' to bring back Michelle Keegan for second series of author Harlan Coban's Fool Me Once TV drama... but there's one problem

As a die-hard fan and follower of Michelle Keegan‘s career, I can’t help but feel a pang of excitement mixed with a dash of disappointment at the predicament Netflix finds itself in. The climax of Fool Me Once left us all stunned, and while it was a masterful move by Harlan Coben to kill off his star attraction, it seems he too is regretting his decision. I remember the days when Harold Bishop rose from the dead in Neighbours, and now we’re hoping for a similar miracle with Michelle Keegan.

It is one of the runaway TV hits of the year – and Netflix is desperate to bring it back.

However, the American titan encounters a complex dilemma while aiming for a sequel of Fool Me Once, as they ended their main character Michelle Keegan in the crime drama’s final act.

A source reveals that Harlan Coben, the author, often wishes he had crafted a more enigmatic finale in his work. He jokingly expresses an interest in creating a ‘Harold from Neighbours’ style plot twist for Ms. Keegan, so as to possibly reintroduce the popular former Coronation Street actress, who has gained significant popularity due to her role in the drama.

Just as the character Bobby Ewing mysteriously returned from the dead in a shower during the 1980s Dallas series, Harold Bishop was dramatically resurrected from a watery burial site in an Australian soap opera in the 1990s.

Five years passed since it was believed he drowned at sea, but it was later discovered that a fishing boat rescued him and transported him to Tasmania. Remarkably, he had developed amnesia, which explained why he didn’t inform anyone about his rescue.

Despite several novels by American author Harlan Coben being adapted into Netflix dramas, some of which are based in Britain, the introduction of Ms. Keegan, a 37-year-old actress, as the captivating lead character Maya Stern in Fool Me Once significantly boosted its popularity, making it one of Netflix’s top-viewed series.

Now the former Our Girl star has found international fame and is tipped for Hollywood roles.

However, the end of her character in “Fool Me Once” has made Coben regretful and eager to devise a storyline, even if it seems unlikely, that would allow her to return for the sequel.

A confidant of Ms. Keegan shared: “During the production of ‘Fool Me Once,’ Michelle and Harlan formed a strong connection, and he finds her exceptional. Harlan feels that Michelle played a significant role in the show’s tremendous popularity.

At the National Television Awards, there was an emotional conversation between them, and Harlan admitted that he deeply regretted writing off her character. He expressed his desire to resurrect it to continue their story in a potential sequel.

As reported, all possibilities are being considered and there’s a strong push for a new installment. Author Harlan Coben, known for selling approximately 60 million books worldwide, is gearing up to publish his upcoming crime thriller, Nobody’s Fool, in March 2025.

According to the report, ‘Fool Me Once’ ranks as the 6th most popular series on Netflix, leaving them eager to recreate its success. Currently, Harlan is considering a sequel series as a potential avenue for another season.

Michelle is deeply disappointed as well, since the show has turned her into a globally recognized figure and her wardrobe choices from it became viral, boosting her brand.

The captivating eight-episode series garnered numerous praises. In this production, Miss Keegan, who is wedded to TV personality Mark Wright, portrays a previous soldier whose spouse gets murdered. The storyline takes an intriguing turn as she later recognizes him on television, visiting their young daughter.

Fans on X, formerly Twitter, thought the storyline unlikely, but it was a ratings winner.

A viewer remarked: “I’m tuned into Fool Me Once, and let me tell you, it’s an absolute farce with Michelle Keegan and Joanna Lumley devouring the scenery like there’s no tomorrow. Guess what? I can’t get enough!” Another commented: “It just got increasingly absurd as time went on.

According to the source, the fact that ‘Fool Me Once’ intentionally has a touch of craziness only increases the possibility that Michelle might return.

Netflix did not provide a statement, while a representative from Coben stated, “At present, we don’t have any formal comments regarding this matter.
