Netflix boss thinks Oscars losing streak is down to not making a movie “people love”
According to Netflix‘s co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, the streamer’s string of losses at the Oscars may be due to the lack of a film that truly resonates with audiences.
Despite bagging accolades across various genres, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Animated Feature Film, and even a Best Supporting Actress award for Zoe Saldaña (in the movie Emilia Pérez, no less), Netflix has yet to secure a Best Picture trophy.
In a fresh conversation with Variety, Sarandos was inquired whether he felt let down that Netflix hadn’t secured the award up to now, even though they had been nominated ten times in that particular category.

He remarked, “I find it challenging to imply that they might be targeting Netflix, considering our studio has been the most frequently nominated for the last three years.
At [the Academy], it works like this – you nominate films that you appreciate and admire, then you vote for the Best Picture award for the film you truly love. Our goal is to create a movie that people will genuinely cherish.
The Netflix executive was similarly queried about whether Emilia Pérez would have taken home the Best Picture award at the 2025 Oscars over Anora, had it not been for the controversy surrounding tweets from the movie’s main actress, Karla Sofía Gascón.
He responded, “I dislike that question since it leads to so many hypotheticals.” Initially, it seemed likely, but there was no certainty that Emilia Pérez, with all its innovative elements and excitement, would secure the award for Best Picture.
“It was a great movie, a great campaign, and I’m bummed we had all that what-if’s thrown at us.”
2025 saw Mikey Madison of “Anora” win the Oscar for Best Actress at the Oscars, while Adrien Brody from “The Brutalist” took home the award for Best Actor, and Kieran Culkin in “A Real Pain” won the Best Supporting Actor accolade.
