Netflix announces 2025 sequel for its biggest non-English movie of all time
As a die-hard fan of nail-biting creature features, I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming sequel to Troll! Having spent countless sleepless nights watching horror films from around the globe, I’ve come to appreciate the unique blend of folklore and modern storytelling that Roar Uthaug masterfully crafted in the original. With Troll 2 promising to delve deeper into the mystical world of these ancient beasts, I can hardly contain my anticipation!
The Dovre mountains appear troubled, given the events depicted at the end of Roar Uthaug’s Norwegian Netflix film titled Troll, released in 2022. This creature feature has dominated Netflix’s charts, becoming their most-watched non-English movie ever, accumulating over 178.6 million hours of viewership.
During a presentation in November, Netflix revealed their global lineup for 2025, which includes the return of Troll 2. Andre Ovredal, who previously directed the film, is set to return as director alongside original writer Espen Aukan. The production will be handled by Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud.
As reported by Deadline, the cast features a mix of fresh faces and some familiar ones. Jon Ketil Johnsen reprises his role as Professor Møller, while Gard B. Eidsvold returns as the disgraced former professor Tobias Tidemann, who is also Nora Tidemann’s father. Additionally, Sara Khorami, Gard B. Eidsvoid, Kim S. Falck-Jorgensen, Trond Magnum, and Aksel Almaas will join the cast.
Previously, it was only announced that Netflix would create a sequel for the creature feature. The upcoming sequel is hinted to revolve around another fairy-tale character, just like its predecessor. Filming for “Troll 2” started in 2024.
At this point, Netflix hasn’t disclosed any new plot specifics about the story of “Troll.” In the film, a band of individuals unite to prevent a troll that has just been awakened from causing destruction. The main focus of this movie that is reminiscent of folklore lies on the Tidemann family, particularly Tobias (Eidsvold) and his daughter Nora (Ine Marie Wilmann).
Because of his deep fascination with the lore about trolls, Tobias ended up losing his position as a university professor. However, when grown-up Nora starts to believe that a genuine troll might have emerged, she finds herself needing her father’s help.
Despite the demise of the main troll character in the initial film, it subtly hints at a possible sequel. Specifically, the storyline concludes with characters speculating about other trolls potentially dwelling within the mountain range, and the movie’s finale suggests a troll emerging triumphantly from a heap of debris.
Besides “Troll 2,” Netflix has also disclosed plans for a follow-up to their second most popular non-English film, titled “Under Paris“. Directed by Xavier Gens and released in June, this movie depicts a massive shark’s appearance in the Seine River in Paris and the chaos it brings about. The ending of “Under Paris” hinted that the shark and its offspring had conquered rivers worldwide, potentially making the sequel a global event.
