I’m really excited to hear Netflix is turning John Steinbeck’s East of Eden into a TV series! If they can do justice to such an incredible story, it could be their version of Yellowstone – that show really changed television over the last decade. Taylor Sheridan built something huge with Yellowstone and everything connected to it, and I’m hoping Netflix can achieve the same kind of success with Steinbeck’s masterpiece.

Yellowstone is a distinctly American tale, unfolding in the Western landscape and focusing on family legacies. It champions self-reliance and the pursuit of freedom—and wealth—above all else. However, it offers a different perspective on America than John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, which will pose a challenge for Netflix as they adapt this complex, multi-generational story.

East Of Eden Is An Epic Exploration Of America

Similar to many of John Steinbeck’s works, East of Eden is a story about America itself. The novel follows the Trask family over three generations, beginning with the Civil War and continuing through World War I. The characters journey from Massachusetts to the Salinas Valley in California.

Steinbeck’s East of Eden paints a broad picture of America, acknowledging both its triumphs and its shortcomings. The novel focuses on the Trask family, who are caught in a repeating pattern of wrongdoing and animosity. However, their pursuit of goodness ultimately offers a hopeful perspective on the American dream.

Netflix’s East Of Eden Is Changing The Novel’s Point-Of-View

John Steinbeck’s East of Eden tells the story of the Trask family and the people around them in California, using multiple perspectives. However, the upcoming Netflix series seems to be focusing solely on the character of Cathy Ames, who will be portrayed by Florence Pugh.

Although Cathy Ames appears in some chapters of East of Eden from her own perspective, she’s not the protagonist. In fact, she’s the villain, and the origin of a lot of the novel’s negativity. This is a surprising choice, and it could easily fail if the show’s creator, Zoe Kazan, doesn’t handle the story carefully.

Netflix’s Change To East Of Eden Could Make The Novel Easier To Adapt

There’s a lot packed into John Steinbeck’s East of Eden – both in terms of its complex themes and the sheer length of the novel. A Netflix series based on the book could easily become overwhelming if it tries to include everything. While some fans might be surprised by the choice to tell the story through Cathy’s eyes, this approach could actually help streamline the adaptation and avoid common pitfalls.

Any film adaptation of East of Eden will inevitably be judged against Steinbeck’s original novel, and likely fall short. However, by reimagining the story and centering it solely on the character of Cathy, the director can create a unique version that doesn’t invite direct comparison to the book.
