Nelly's dilemma: Rapper was arrested near St. Louis for alleged possession of ecstasy

As a seasoned movie critic with a knack for deciphering the intricacies of human drama, I must say that Nelly’s latest chapter unfolding feels like a plot twist straight out of a gritty urban film noir. Having followed his career since the days of “Country Grammar,” it’s hard not to feel a pang of sympathy for this St. Louis icon, whose life seems to be as unpredictable as a rollercoaster ride through the Mississippi delta.

Nelly’s got a little bit of a dilemma on his hands: a run-in with St. Louis police.

Early on Wednesday morning, as reported by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the artist known for “Hot in Herre” and “Dilemma,” aged 49, was taken into custody in his home state. The arrest took place at a casino near St. Louis, where authorities claimed they found four ecstasy pills on him.

In Maryland Heights, a city northwest of St. Louis, police detained and later released an individual named Nelly (whose real name is Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.). This incident occurred at a time when he was also facing charges for driving without valid insurance proof, an offense he had been cited for in June 2018 in the same city. A judge’s warrant issued in December 2023 remained active and unresolved at that point.

According to Scott Rosenblum, legal representative for Nelly, the Grammy-winning artist had successfully won multiple jackpots at a casino. However, when he went to claim his winnings, the officer responsible for the transaction unnecessarily checked for outstanding warrants. Upon discovering an existing warrant, the officer handcuffed Nelly and, feeling obligated, led him through the casino in full view of other patrons.

Rosenblum further claimed that there was no valid reason for the police officer to perform a search on Nelly since he lacked probable cause. It was reported that Nelly, who is expecting a child with singer Ashanti, was never informed about the warrant and thus remained unaware of it, according to Rosenblum’s statements.

In my viewpoint, I’m absolutely certain that this situation won’t lead to any substantial progress. Consequently, we plan on requesting a thorough investigation into the actions of this officer.

Rosenblum did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment.

A few months ago, I discovered that my marriage to Ashanti Douglas took place on December 27, 2023, according to records from the St. Louis County Recorder database. It’s now public knowledge that this is true, and I am currently facing arrest.

In April, the “Baby” singer, 43, confirmed speculation that she is starting a family with Nelly.

In the heart of a fresh new chapter of my life, I find myself immersed in a treasure trove of love, hope, and excitement, as I shared with Essence back in April. The dream of motherhood has long captivated me, and now, as I walk this path with my family, fiancé, and unwavering fans – who have stood by me through the ups and downs of my career – the experience is nothing short of extraordinary.

Last year, the pair of musicians decided to try love again, having dated intermittently for approximately eleven years prior to their separation in 2013. The upcoming child will be Ashanti’s first and Nelly’s fifth. He has a daughter, Chanelle, who is 30, and a son, Cornell, who is 25, with his former partner, Channetta Valentine. In addition, he adopted the two children of his late sister Jackie Donahue following her death from leukemia in 2005.

Nelly has had some past encounters with the police. Back in April 2015, he was taken into custody for felony drug allegations in Tennessee. Subsequently, he admitted guilt for a lesser charge and, following about a year on probation, successfully petitioned to have his record sealed.

Approximately two years ago, Nelly was apprehended in Auburn, Washington, following a woman’s accusation that he had sexually assaulted her on his tour bus. This woman filed a lawsuit against him, and Nelly counter-sued. Eventually, the legal proceedings were resolved in September 2018.

As a huge fan of both Nelly and Janet Jackson, I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that they were going to perform together as part of her “Together Again” tour! Having grown up listening to their music, I can honestly say that this concert experience was a dream come true for me.
