Neil Young’s Wife Claims Trump Administration Sabotaged His US Citizenship Application
During President Donald Trump’s initial term, immigration authorities attempted to challenge the citizenship application of musician Neil Young, as per his spouse Daryl Hannah’s statements.
Originally from Canada, this individual was in the midst of obtaining another citizenship in 2019, an experience he found challenging to navigate. In particular, he recounted that his previous marijuana usage drew significant attention during the interviews.
Hannah condemned what Young had to go through in a recent interview with BBC.
Hannah stated that they employed every underhanded tactic imaginable, repeatedly calling him in for interviews and re-interviews. It’s preposterous, she added, as the individual has resided in America, paid taxes here, since their twenties.
1945 marked the birth of an individual in Toronto, Canada. In 1966, he made his way into the U.S. sans a visa, but by 1970, he had obtained permanent residency status (a green card).
In January 2020, Young officially became a U.S. citizen. To celebrate, he shared on Instagram a photo of himself saluting beside the American flag. Additionally, his political leanings were evident as he posed in front of a sign inviting people to register to vote as Democrats.
Hannah’s recent disclosure about Young’s difficulties in acquiring U.S. citizenship caught everyone’s attention, especially as the renowned rock artist has voiced concerns that President Trump might prevent him from re-entering the country during his upcoming European concert tour.
In simpler terms, when Young travels to Europe for a music gig and speaks about Donald J. Trump, he might face the consequence of being banned or imprisoned upon returning to America, possibly ending up sleeping on a cold concrete floor with only an aluminum blanket for comfort, as expressed by him on his website on April 1st.

In my expert opinion, it seems that frequent travelers like myself are facing new challenges due to evolving advice for those re-entering America from various countries. For instance, if I were to return from Europe and encounter restrictions, it would unfortunately disrupt my planned USA tour. This would consequently mean that all those who purchased tickets for my concerts would be unable to attend. For the latest updates on these matters, I recommend checking out the CANADA Desk regularly.
Indeed, speaking critically about President Trump or his administration could potentially result in being denied entry back into the United States,” he continued.
Young has long been an outspoken critic of Trump, calling him ‘the worst president in the history.’
Last year, I took a bold step and filed a lawsuit against the Trump campaign, aiming to put an end to their use of my music at their rallies.
In a court in New York, young chose to drop his lawsuit in December, following Trump’s defeat by Joe Biden in November. This dismissal was ‘with prejudice,’ which means the case can’t be brought up again for another trial.
Hannah, who got married to Young in the year 2018, expressed her hope that he wouldn’t encounter any retribution due to his American citizenship. However, she seems to be more hopeful or positive compared to her spouse.
She stated, “They are keeping individuals with green cards or visas, which is appalling and alarming, yet it appears they aren’t preventing U.S. citizens from reentering the country at this time. Therefore, I doubt they will do so in the future.

Mahmoud Khalil is an illustrative case of a permanent resident (green card holder) who was taken into custody by the Trump administration.
Last spring, Khalil, a former student, played a significant part in the anti-Israel demonstrations that caused quite a stir at Columbia University in New York City.
He was born in Syria but has Algerian citizenship through his mother.
Kahlil was taken into custody at his home, with his expectant spouse present. Since mid-March, he has been held in a detention facility located in Louisiana.
Despite Khalil not facing any criminal charges, Secretary of State Marco Rubio contends that his ongoing stay in the U.S. could potentially lead to significant repercussions in our foreign policy.
The immigration judge concurred with Rubio’s evaluation and ruled that Khalil should be deported from the U.S., but Khalil’s legal team has announced they will challenge this decision in an appeal.
