Neil Sedaka, known for his popular songs like “Calendar Girl” and “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” passed away from heart disease caused by a buildup of plaque in his arteries.
This condition happens when plaque – a buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances – accumulates inside and on the walls of arteries. This can cause serious problems like heart attacks, strokes, and aneurysms. In fact, the American Heart Association says that heart and blood vessel disease caused by plaque buildup is the number one cause of death globally.
According to a death certificate published by the New York Post on Wednesday, the musician also suffered from kidney failure, which contributed to their death.
Neil Sedaka passed away unexpectedly in Los Angeles on February 27th at the age of 86, his family confirmed to The Times.
Music
The upbeat songwriter was famous for several popular songs from the 1970s, like “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” and “Laughter in the Rain.”
The family of Neil Sedaka has announced his unexpected death with deep sadness. He was a legendary figure in rock and roll and an inspiration to many, but those who knew him personally will remember him as a wonderful person who will be greatly missed.
Neil Sedaka grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and was a classically trained pianist at Juilliard. He became a pop star in the 1960s, and while his own performing career had its ups and downs, he consistently wrote hit songs for other artists for many years, often working with lyricists like Howard Greenfield.
In a 1996 interview with The Times, songwriter Neil Sedaka explained that writing songs gets increasingly challenging because artists feel pressure to surpass their previous successes. He said while it’s great to perform well-known hits like ‘Calendar Girl’ and ‘Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,’ it’s important to continue innovating and creating new material. Ultimately, an artist has to trust their own judgment and hope audiences connect with their work.
Sedaka is survived by his wife Leba; children Dara and Marc; and three grandchildren.
