Neil Gaiman dropped by publisher Dark Horse Comics over sexual assault allegations
As an ardent admirer, I’m compelled to share that Dark Horse Comics, a brand I deeply respect, is standing firm against the accusations faced by author Neil Gaiman regarding sexual misconduct. The situation is grave and demands our attention.
Over the weekend, the publishing company made public their decision to cease working with “American Gods” and “Good Omens” author Neil Gaiman due to the serious allegations against him. In response, Dark Horse Comics, formerly Twitter, announced that they too have terminated the publication of his “Anansi Boys” comic series and collected volume.
A representative for Gaiman did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment.
Weeks after accusations of sexual assault against him surfaced in a New York Magazine article on January 13, Dark Horse Comics – where Gaiman’s work is showcased – released their statement. In this report, eight women claimed that Gaiman, aged 64, had committed assault, abuse, and coercion during the period from the 1990s up until 2022, while he resided in various countries including the United States, Britain, and New Zealand.
Books
Neil Gaiman, a well-known fantasy novelist, refutes claims of sexual misconduct that were brought forth by eight individuals in a powerful article published by New York Magazine.
In July 2024, some women who claimed abuse in an upcoming New York article had previously shared their accounts on the Tortoise Media podcast titled “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman.” A day following the article’s publication, Gaiman released a statement on his website refuting the women’s accusations.
He made it clear that while he’s not flawless, he has always ensured that any interaction with others is consensual and never forced or non-consenting.
Gaiman penned down his endeavors to “complete the required tasks,” rebuild the faith of his loved ones and readers, and contemplate on his past. He penned: “I do not acknowledge any instances of abuse.
Acclaimed author Neil Gaiman has sold over 50 million books globally, including “The Sandman” and “Coraline.” He’s leveraged this success into a prosperous Hollywood career through TV and movie adaptations of his works. However, this thriving career may encounter some challenges due to recent sexual assault allegations.
Television
Fans who disapprove of Netflix’s casting choices for ‘The Sandman’ series find Neil Gaiman, the originator of this esteemed comic, to be their biggest source of dread.
In September, Disney, who had been planning to make a movie based on Neil Gaiman’s novel “The Graveyard Book”, temporarily halted production – several months following reports of allegations made against them in July by Tortoise Media. Subsequently, Gaiman decided to step away from the third and final season of Amazon Prime Video’s show “Good Omens”.
After Neil Gaiman left the project, Amazon chose in October to focus on concluding the “Good Omens” series with a standalone, 90-minute episode instead of a full season. Reports from various sources suggest that this final episode will be made without Gaiman’s involvement. At this time, it remains uncertain whether Amazon plans to release only this one episode.
2021 saw Amazon securing a production for adapting Neil Gaiman’s novel “Anansi Boys.” Delroy Lindo, Malachi Kirby, CCH Pounder, Jason Watkins, Fiona Shaw, and Whoopi Goldberg have since signed on to the project. However, the current production status of “Anansi Boys” is yet to be determined.
Amazon’s spokesperson didn’t promptly give additional details when asked by The Times.
Neil Gaiman’s works have been revitalized on Netflix, with adaptations of “Dead Boy Detectives” and “The Sandman” for television. However, the former met its end after its initial season in August; whereas, “The Sandman” is set to continue with a second season. In September, Netflix confirmed that “The Sandman” would resume in 2025, but representatives from the streaming service have yet to provide further details upon The Times’ request for additional information.
