Neighbours Revival Axed Again: Major Signs of Failure Revealed

Stunned fans learned on Thursday that Neighbours, the show they love, is being canceled again, barely two years since its initial comeback.

However, several indicators pointed towards the show’s downfall, as it began to struggle only a few weeks following its return to our screens in October 2023.

After its premiere, Neighbours took over The Bold and the Beautiful’s regular 4:30 PM time slot, shifting it to 4 PM instead.

However, following the upset among fans of the American soap, the network opted to revert Bold back to its initial airtime. During this period, Neighbours was aired from Monday through Thursday at 4:00 PM instead.

A few short months passed, and Channel 10 revealed their plan to reduce the airing of Neighbours from five to three episodes weekly.

However it eventually reversed its decision following audience backlash.

Despite the allure of popular American actress and former “The OC” star, Mischa Barton, the revival of “The Neighbors” didn’t manage to draw in a large viewer base.

In the debut of the program, only 244,000 viewers nationwide and 122,000 people in major urban areas watched it.

Additionally, around 68,000 spectators watched the premiere on delay services like 10Play and 10Peach.

54,000 additional viewers from regional regions tuned in, bringing the nationwide viewership to a grand total of 174,000.

244,000 people tuned in for the show following its initially anticipated final episode in July 2022, which had attracted 1.09 million viewers.

It is said that the popular Australian daytime drama series may conclude this coming summer, as production company Fremantle could not reach an agreement on a fresh contract with Amazon.

2025 marks the year when the last-ever episode is set to be aired, as reported by The Sun, meaning viewers must bid farewell to Ramsay Street once more.

According to a source, Amazon provided Fremantle with a two-year trial period. Regrettably, they were unable to attract enough viewers.

‘It’s a really sad day especially for the cast and crew who work on the show in Melbourne.

‘This really is the end of Neighbours just as it’s celebrated its 40th birthday.’

Long-standing lovers of the soap opera swiftly flocked to X to express their sorrow, following the news of the show’s cancellation for a second time.

They wrote: ‘Just heard that #Neighbours is being axed again. I am beyond gutted’.

*One person expressed doubt, saying, ‘I’m not certain I can face this all over again,’ as another exclaimed, ‘Neighbors needing help with their axes yet again? Incredible!*

One person remarked, “I can’t understand why Home and Away continues to thrive when they’ve canceled Neighbors not once, but twice. To me, it has always been the better Australian soap opera.

After a difficult and challenging 14 months on a personal level, I firmly reject their attempt to take something else away from me again!! It’s one of the precious 20 minutes in my day where I can find some peace. Absolutely not!!! This was another person’s response.

Similarly, other viewers expressed apprehension about not receiving a satisfying conclusion like the one the series provided previously.

Daily Mail has contacted Amazon and Fremantle for comment.

Two years ago, the relationship between neighbors almost came to an end when Channel 5, one of its co-financiers for British viewers, decided to terminate their agreement.

On July 29, 2022, the last episode was broadcasted, bringing back some highly recognized personalities such as Margot Robbie, Jason Donovan, Kylie Minogue, and Guy Pearce.

Additionally, notable appearances were made by Holly Valance as Flick Scully, Natalie Imbruglia as Beth Brennan, and Ian Smith as Harold Bishop, who all returned to their previous characters.

Or simply:

Holly Valance (Flick Scully), Natalie Imbruglia (Beth Brennan), and Ian Smith (Harold Bishop) made special appearances in their original roles.

There’s uncertainty about whether the second final episode will continue to draw the same high-caliber celebrities, given that fans were thrilled when several iconic Neighbours stars reappeared for the initial finale.

Just a few short months following its initial triumph, it became official that Amazon Freevee was granting the series a second chance by renewing it for continued production under new updates.

In September 2023, the rebooted series of Neighbours made its debut on Amazon. However, after approximately two years, it has been announced that it will no longer be shown on our screens.

Fear for the show’s continuation arose among fans, given that Amazon announced they were ending Freevee, and on top of that, a beloved character decided to leave.

Viewers found themselves deeply saddened as actor Ryan Moloney bid farewell to the Neighbours series back in September, concluding his long-standing character portrayal of Jarrod ‘Toadfish’ Rebecchi.

30 years as Toadie on Ramsay Street has come to an end for me. I won’t disclose the storyline for my character, but perhaps there’s a chance I might follow in the footsteps of Jim Robinson someday. This was penned at the time of my departure.

‘Or maybe I’ll be the next Harold Bishop and keep popping back over the years.’

Since then, Ryan made an appearance again in the soap opera, but he didn’t take up the role permanently. Whether or not he’ll be back for the final episode remains uncertain.

Since debuting as Toadie on Ramsay Street in 1995, Ryan has grown to be a very familiar and identifiable figure on the Neighbours set.

Since its debut on television in 1985, this popular Australian drama series has continued to air for an impressive 40 years, providing a launchpad for numerous Australian superstars.
