NEIGHBORHOOD is creating oversized versions of their popular incense chambers for a new exhibition called “IDOLS OF SMOKE” in Harajuku. The show, held at StandBy, features seven key designs from an archive originally shown during NEIGHBORHOOD’s 30th anniversary event last year. These selected pieces have been rebuilt as much larger, limited-edition art objects.

NEIGHBORHOOD’s incense chamber is one of their signature items – a beautifully crafted ceramic piece that’s been released in many versions and always proves popular. It’s also been featured in collaborations with other brands and artists, becoming a symbol of everything NEIGHBORHOOD represents. For their “IDOLS OF SMOKE” collection, they’re revisiting seven classic incense chamber designs, but this time on a much larger scale. The oversized versions create a powerful impression that the smaller pieces simply can’t match. Each design is limited to around 15 pieces per color, making them truly unique works of art.

Two of the larger pieces were created in collaboration with well-known artists, adding another layer of cultural significance. The collection includes works made with FUTURA, a famous graffiti artist who began working in New York in the 1970s, and Dr. Woo, an internationally recognized tattoo artist known for his detailed single-needle style. Expanding these artistic partnerships to gallery size transforms what started as a simple home item into something resembling sculpture, highlighting how highly sought-after these incense chambers have become.

The brand NEIGHBORHOOD, founded in 1994 by Shinsuke Takizawa in Tokyo’s Harajuku district, is continuing a long-standing tradition. Known for blending underground culture with meticulous Japanese artistry, the brand’s latest presentation builds on a previous showcase, offering a more impactful experience. As a special addition, limited-edition ceramic salt and pepper shakers and T-shirts will be available for purchase.

“IDOLS OF SMOKE” runs July 31 through August 2, with advance-lottery sales beginning July 31.
