Moving on from the latest blockbuster thriller that left everyone excitedly discussing it, to an action-packed Pokémon adventure featuring Ryan Reynolds, your local TV stations have got you covered!
Here, Digital Spy has rounded up five of the best to watch out for over the next day.
What to Read Next
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu
In 2019, I was captivated by a movie where I got to hear the charming Ryan Reynolds lend his voice to the lovable pocket monster titled Pokémon himself! Joining forces with an aspiring trainer named Tim Goodman, played by Justice Smith, we embark on a journey to find Tim’s missing father. As we progress, we encounter a host of familiar Pokémon characters, while stars like Bill Nighy, Rita Ora, Kathryn Newton, and Suki Waterhouse make their appearances too!
The movie “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” was highly successful upon its release, earning praise from critics such as News.com.au, who described it as a “quite enjoyable journey”. With a sequel now confirmed, you can still catch the original film this afternoon if you’d like.
Airing on Saturday, at 2.25pm on BBC One. Available after on BBC iPlayer.
Zombieland: Double Tap
In 2019, the hit sequel “Zombieland: Double Tap” was added to the list of successful films. This film arrived ten years after its predecessor, in which a group of survivors navigating an apocalyptic world overrun by zombies were portrayed. In “Double Tap”, the original characters played by Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Emma Stone reunite to confront even more advanced zombies as they seek out Little Rock (Abigail Breslin).
In our assessment, Digital Spy indicated that if you enjoyed the initial installment, you would find the follow-up equally pleasing. Interestingly, the film surpassed the success of its predecessor, raking in a greater amount at the box office.
Airing on Saturday/Sunday at midnight on Channel 4. Available after on Channel 4.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
1969’s film, often hailed as the finest Bond movie (even by Digital Spy), represents George Lazenby’s sole performance as the legendary spy character.
In the sixth installment of the series, James Bond confronts the antagonist Blofeld, portrayed by Telly Savalas. Blofeld’s nefarious scheme involves threatening global food supplies and livestock through ‘angels of death’. Meanwhile, Bond develops romantic feelings for Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo, played by Diana Rigg.
The movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” boasts high-profile admirers like Christopher Nolan and features prominently Louis Armstrong’s ‘We Have All the Time in the World’, a tune that echoed in the recent release “No Time to Die”. Be prepared with tissues for an emotional finale.
Airing on Sunday at 1.10pm on ITV1. Available after on ITVX.
Saltburn
In 2023, Emerald Fennell’s second film gained significant attention and became a viral hit, particularly due to a memorable bathtub scene. This dark comedy revolves around Oliver Quick (played by Barry Keoghan), who finds himself infatuated with his fellow Oxford student Felix Catton (portrayed by Jacob Elordi). During the summer, he is invited to stay at Felix’s grand family estate.
The movie titled Saltburn garnered significant praise, with the BBC describing it as “exuberantly enjoyable” if one views it more as a vivid pulp fantasy instead of a profound satire. Digital Spy, on the other hand, considered it a “stunning dream of beauty, indulgence, and opulence,” but we pointed out that it may struggle with an excess of style over substance. You’ll be able to form your own opinion when it airs on the BBC this coming weekend.
Airing on Sunday at 10.30pm on BBC One. Available after on BBC iPlayer.
Walk the Line
If you prefer a true-life tale for your Sunday evening viewing, then the movie “Walk the Line” is also scheduled. This 2005 film features Joaquin Phoenix portraying Johnny Cash. The biographical drama follows Cash’s journey to stardom, along with his battles with substance abuse and love story with June Carter, played by Reese Witherspoon in an Academy Award-winning role.
The film directed by James Mangold, previously known for guiding Timothée Chalamet in the biopic A Complete Unknown about Bob Dylan, was widely acclaimed by critics, earning a 83% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics at the San Francisco Chronicle referred to it as an “engrossing, unvarnished account of an exceptional American artist”, with most reviewers commending the acting talent displayed.
Airing on Sunday at 10.50pm on BBC Two. Available after on BBC iPlayer.
The inaugural print magazine from Digital Spy, titled “British Comedy Legends,” is now available for purchase! You can buy it at your local newsstand or online for only £3.99.
