Near-perfect “savagely brutal” horror movie confirms streaming release date – and it’s soon
Norwegian horror movie The Ugly Stepsister has landed a streaming release date – and it’s soon.
Under the direction of Emilie Blichfeldt, this film presents a chilling reinterpretation of the classic Grimm Brothers’ tale, “Cinderella.” The protagonist, Elvira (Lea Myren), takes drastic and grisly steps to win over the prince in this dark retelling.
After its debut in Norway earlier this month and its recent premiere in the UK, it has been officially announced that “The Ugly Stepsister” will become accessible for streaming on Shudder in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand starting from 9 May.

The character, “The Ugly Stepsister,” is portrayed as a thoughtful exploration of self-image and societal beauty norms, as Elvira strives to capture the prince’s heart, regardless of the price she might pay.
In a realm where the pursuit of beauty can be ruthless, Elvira and the captivating Agnes will strive to claim the title of the evening’s most radiant lady, as stated in the movie’s summary.
After debuting at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the horror film received an outstanding 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning it the title of ‘Certified Fresh’.
Mashable characterizes The Ugly Stepsister as “extremely violent yet oddly attractive,” whereas Bloody Disgusting finds it to be “graceful, fashionable, and gruesome.
Paste added: “A beautifully captured and often quite funny piece of feminist social satire.”
In a critique by Variety, it’s stated that Blichfeldt emphasizes through his female characters that unattainable beauty standards are the most unfair, be it in reality or in this warped fictional realm, as they clash with men’s expectations.
It has been confirmed that the 1998 film “Urban Legend” will be remade to fit more contemporary times.
This horror film centered around a series of mysterious killings at a university that appeared to be based on urban legends. The cast included Jared Leto from “Suicide Squad,” Joshua Jackson from “Dawson’s Creek,” Michael Rosenbaum from “Smallville,” and Tara Reid from “Sharknado.
Last week, it was announced that Sony’s Screen Gems division has begun early exploration of a fresh take on an urban legend concept, focusing on how these tales evolve and propagate within the realm of digital data and social networking platforms.
The Ugly Stepsister will be available to stream on Shudder from 9 May.
As a fan, I’m thrilled to announce that I can’t wait to get my hands on Digital Spy’s first print magazine – “British Comedy Legends”! You can grab a copy from your local newsagents or purchase it online for £7.99. Don’t miss out on this hilarious journey through British comedy history!
