You can now watch the highly-rated Nordic horror-thriller, The Innocents, for free in the UK. Critics loved the film when it came out, and it currently has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 120 reviews. Reviewers particularly praised how the movie cleverly twists the typical idea of childhood innocence, calling it ‘chilling’.
This Norwegian film from 2021 centers on a group of kids who unexpectedly develop superpowers. However, as strange things begin to happen, they start to lose their childlike innocence and face increasingly unsettling circumstances.
The horror-thriller, directed and written by Eskil Vogt (who previously worked with Joachim Trier on films like The Worst Person in the World and Sentimental Value), is currently streaming on Channel 4 until March 15th.

The child actors deliver exceptional performances, and director Vogt brings a fresh perspective to the familiar story of people with hidden abilities. However, the Arizona Republic also pointed out that some parts of the film are difficult to watch, while Polygon described it as captivating.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the work avoids exaggerated drama, but implies that children’s inner lives are surprisingly strong, morally complicated, and sometimes even brutal – a thought that is both unsettling and captivating.

The Irish Times also commended the film, noting that Eskil Vogt, who co-wrote the Oscar-nominated film The Worst Person in the World and frequently collaborates with director Joachim Trier, returns to the supernatural elements he previously explored in Trier’s 2017 thriller, Thelma.
According to The Wall Street Journal, The Innocents is a sophisticated and layered film that values genuine emotion and surprising acts of courage. While it’s not a lighthearted movie, it’s ultimately uplifting, unsettling, and wonderfully strange.

If spooky thrillers aren’t your cup of tea, Channel 4 has lots of other options. They’ve recently added the action-comedy Bullet Train, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and the classic teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You.
The Innocents is streaming on Channel 4 until 15 March.
