Despite dying young at age 46 in 1937, and having a relatively short writing career of around eleven years, he produced approximately seventy short stories. These stories have since become incredibly influential and are considered classics of 20th-century fiction.
How does Image Comics describe the series?
In Image Comics’ press release announcing the new series, the story is described:
“The Thing on the Doorstep” tells a chilling story of a friendship consumed by dark, otherworldly forces. Daniel Upton finds himself accused of murdering his longtime friend, Edward Derby, within the walls of Arkham Sanitarium. Though the evidence points to his guilt, Daniel insists he’s innocent, suggesting something truly terrifying happened. As the story unfolds, readers discover the horrifying truth behind their connection and how Edward slowly succumbed to a terrifying reality beyond human understanding.
In 2009, Library of America published a collection of horror short stories called American Fantastic Tales: Terror and the Uncanny from Poe to the Pulps. The fact that only one story by H.P. Lovecraft – “The Thing on the Doorstep” – was included highlights how well-regarded that particular story remains.
What do the creators behind the adaptation have to say about the project?

In a recent press release, creator Birks expressed excitement about bringing H.P. Lovecraft’s The Thing on the Doorstep to life with Top Cow and Image Comics. He explained that while staying true to the original story’s cosmic horror, he wanted to focus on the characters’ relationships and the psychological drama within it. Birks added a new layer to Lovecraft’s universe, hoping to appeal to both dedicated fans and newcomers alike.
Okay, so I just heard from Marc Silvestri, a huge name in comics, and he was talking about this writer, Simon Birks. Apparently, Birks is amazing at building suspense and really making you feel the story. Silvestri said he and everyone at Top Cow have been fans for ages, and they’re super confident I’m going to be blown away by his take on ‘The Thing on the Doorstep’. He described it as seriously creepy, really touching, and something you won’t forget easily. Sounds awesome, right?
The Thing on the Doorstep #1 is due out on February 11, 2026
