Near-perfect darkly gritty Australian prison drama lands new UK streaming home

A highly-rated Australian prison series, featuring an actor previously known from the show *Neighbours*, is now available on a UK streaming service after being previously limited to purchase or rental.

I’m really excited about this new show! It’s called *Inside*, and the cast is fantastic – Guy Pearce, who I remember from *Neighbours* and a bunch of other great stuff, Cosmo Jarvis who was amazing in *Shōgun*, and Vincent Miller from the Aussie series *Plum*. The story seems really interesting too – it’s about a new prisoner who gets mentored by two older, more experienced criminals.

The 2024 film by Charles Williams, which was previously available to buy digitally and on disc, is now streaming on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland.

When it was first released, *Inside* received widespread praise both in Australia and internationally. Currently, 97% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given the film a positive review, based on 30 reviews.

According to *The Hollywood Reporter*, the powerfully acted drama is rewarding and offers insightful commentary on mental health, the impact of past trauma, taking control of one’s life, and the challenges of difficult or absent fathers. They also praised the performance as some of Pearce’s best work.

Even though it’s a fairly typical and limited prison drama, the debut film from Williams is filled with genuinely compassionate moments that quietly build a surprising amount of emotional depth, according to IndieWire.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists also praised the film, noting that while *Inside* is a gripping Australian prison drama, it explores themes that go beyond Australia’s history with its prison system.

According to *Variety*, Charles Williams’s debut film stands out from typical prison movies thanks to compelling acting and a unique look at the characters’ minds.

Pearce considers his role in *Inside* a recent career success, following a stretch where he appeared in several low-quality films – as he himself put it – because he needed income during his divorce.

He admitted to doing things he wasn’t proud of during his divorce, explaining he needed the money. He said facing financial hardship forced him to compromise his principles, and he felt a huge weight lifted once the divorce was paid off.

Inside is streaming now on Prime Video.
