Ncuti Gatwa Reveals Reasons for Leaving Doctor Who, Hints at Possible Return

The buzz surrounding “Doctor Who” has been intense following the season finale, with Ncuti Gatwa‘s departure being somewhat overlooked in all the excitement. Although hints of his exit were present before it was officially announced, the anticipation about Billie Piper rejoining the franchise and doubts about the series’ continuation have overshadowed Gatwa’s explanations for leaving sooner than fans anticipated.

With Disney+ subscribers potentially missing out on future episodes of the renowned sci-fi series, Ncuti Gatwa recently discussed his departure from the show during an interview with Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday. During the conversation, the actor provided additional insights into his decision to leave, following a farewell message he shared with fans in June. In his own words, the actor explained his reasons for parting ways with the series.

As I’m growing older, my body is feeling the fatigue… But recently, I’ve taken up ballet which has led me to make wonderful choices. Working in this field is truly extraordinary – something every actor yearns for. Given its incredible nature, it can be incredibly demanding. It requires a lot from you, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. So, after much consideration, I decided it was time for me to embark on this challenging yet rewarding journey.

It wouldn’t be fair to criticize Ncuti Gatwa for his role as the Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’, despite the fact that some older actors and actresses have played the part before him. Many of them have acknowledged the challenging nature of the role, and considering the amount of running, climbing, jumping, and emotional scenes he had to perform over two seasons, it’s clear he was one of the more physically demanding actors to portray the Doctor during the modern era.

Naturally, the next question was if he might reappear someday. However, not every Doctor who departs from “Doctor Who” eventually returns. While David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker have made appearances since leaving, Peter Capaldi and Christopher Eccleston haven’t yet. So, when asked about a potential return, what did Ncuti Gatwa say?

Never say never.

Given that his departure was so recent, it’s understandable that he hasn’t yet provided a clear answer about returning to the role. After all, “Doctor Who” hasn’t even announced a release date for its next season, and it seems premature to expect a definite response from him on this matter at this time.

More On Doctor Who

As a devoted fan of Doctor Who, I share the concerns about the show’s departure from HBO Max. However, I believe this transition could pave the way for an experience we haven’t enjoyed in years – a more immersive and tailored viewing journey that caters specifically to our beloved series. After all, change often brings growth and exciting new opportunities!

We haven’t received news yet about when the popular show Doctor Who will be renewed, and who the BBC might team up with to produce the upcoming season. Although it hasn’t been verified, there are strong whispers that Disney might withdraw from their co-production role, potentially creating an opportunity for another production company to step in.

It’s likely that Ncuti Gatwa’s run as The Doctor will continue to stream on Disney+ for some time. If the series moves to a different platform that doesn’t acquire those episodes, it’ll stay accessible for now, alongside David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s collaborative episodes from the 60th anniversary specials.

Watch episodes featuring Ncuti Gatwa on Disney+, starting at just $9.99 monthly with their new ad-supported plan. Upgrade to an ad-free experience for $15.99 per month or save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 annually and enjoy a full year of uninterrupted streaming. Check out the deal now!

At present, Disney+ is broadcasting the latest two seasons and anniversary specials of “Doctor Who,” and the remainder of its modern reboot can be streamed with an HBO Max subscription. Since the end of July, much of the collection is set to depart from HBO Max, so don’t miss out on watching it online!
