Ncuti Gatwa promises more Doctor Who is coming, despite no official renewal

As a long-time Whovian who’s traveled through more TARDIS doors than I can count, this latest season of Doctor Who has been quite the rollercoaster ride! The highs were exhilarating – “23 Yards” and “Dot & Bubble” left me breathless with their captivating storylines. But the lows, well, they felt like a trip to the Weeping Angels’ planet (not my favorite destination).

This year marked the debut of “Doctor Who”‘s first full season with a significantly boosted budget thanks to Disney. With the return of Russell T. Davies as showrunner and Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the role of the Doctor, the series appeared poised for unprecedented success. However, the latest season garnered mixed critiques and fell short of the massive viewership many anticipated.

In the latest run of “Doctor Who,” episodes such as “23 Yards” and “Dot & Bubble” were standouts, but there were also some underwhelming episodes like “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord.” On Disney+, it didn’t quite top the charts, but it did manage to surpass expectations among its intended audience. The British science fiction show is set to make a comeback in 2025 with a new season, along with a brand-new spinoff titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” which is currently being filmed.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the upcoming seasons of my favorite show. It’s under Disney’s wing right now, which is in a bit of a delicate position. But here’s some exciting news! Ncuti Gatwa, one of the stars, mentioned during an interview on The Graham Norton Show (as reported by RadioTimes) that we might be seeing a third season, or Season 16 if you prefer the New Who format, next year, even though it hasn’t been officially renewed yet. He said everything’s going smoothly: we wrapped up the second series this year, there’s a Christmas special on the horizon, and filming for the third season is set to begin next year. So let’s hope for the best!

This holiday season, you can catch the beloved character of “Doctor Who” in its annual Christmas Special on December 25th. Entitled “Joy to the World,” this exciting episode brings “Bridgerton’s” star Nicola Coughlan into the mix as Joy, whose life takes an unexpected turn following an encounter with the Doctor. If you can’t wait to watch the Christmas Special ahead of schedule this year, there’s a surprise in store for you! A contest is taking place where 31 lucky participants will be given an early screening as a special holiday gift. Don’t miss out – enter now!
