Ncuti Gatwa has confirmed that Doctor Who, Season 3, will be filmed next year.

As a dedicated Whovian who’s been on this rollercoaster of time and space since the First Doctor graced our screens, I can confidently say that Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th incarnation has become my favorite yet! His transformative portrayal of The Doctor is a testament to the show’s enduring ability to reinvent itself while staying true to its heart.

It’s been tough to believe that it’s almost been a full year since the 15th Doctor made his debut on BBC’s classic show Doctor Who, but he actually donned his costume in November 2023. His role as the main character was announced much earlier, in fact, more than a year before he appeared in an episode, which was “The Giggle” in December 2023. Since then, viewers have been on a rollercoaster of adventures with him, from “The Church on Ruby Road” to “Empire of Death.

More to Come

On the Graham Norton Show, he shared eagerly anticipated updates regarding Whovians.

It is all going well. We did the second series this year, the Christmas special, and we are filming a third series next year.

Ncuti Gatwa

Ncuti made a remarkable debut in the “Doctor Who” series, as each actor portraying the character known as The Doctor undergoes a distinctive metamorphosis called “regeneration.” This creative approach enabled William Hartnell to step down from the role, and since 1963, various incarnations of this character have captivated audiences and melted our hearts. When David Tennant, the 10th and 14th Doctor, sensed a regeneration approaching, he sought assistance from his companions. This led to a brief collaboration between Tennant and his successor, and the appearance of Ncuti’s vibrant, emotionally expressive portrayal.

This particular Doctor, during his regular tenure, has been more forthcoming about his past compared to his predecessors, enriching the viewing experience. His joy is palpable when dealing with baby space captains, while moments of intense danger on battlefields evoke feelings of regret and desperation. Musical performances like “There’s Always A Twist At the End” have also been part of his repertoire. Jordan King from Empire described him as a breath of fresh air who excels at making even the craziest plotlines compelling. As a fan, I wholeheartedly concur with this assessment.

What comes next

Ncuti Gatwa has confirmed that Doctor Who, Season 3, will be filmed next year.

The upcoming “Doctor Who” Christmas special is just around the corner, scheduled for a few months from now. Back in November 2023, it was announced that Nicola Coughlan, known for her roles in “Derry Girls” and “Bridgerton,” will be featured in an episode titled “Joy to the World.” As Millie Gibson has departed the show and we haven’t seen Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra yet, Coughlan’s appearance seems to be a one-time guest role similar to Kylie Minogue’s Astrid or David Morrisey’s Jackson Lake. Given her exceptional performances in all of her roles, we are eagerly anticipating the story that Coughlan will bring to life for us.

On Christmas Day, December 25th, 2024, you can catch the broadcast of “Joy to the World”. We’re eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Season 3 of Doctor Who.
