Okay, so things have changed – Parker’s retired, and Knight and McGee have moved over to Army CID. But honestly, you can’t keep a good team down! MCRT basically gets back together to tackle a new case. Even though everything’s in flux with the team splitting up, Jimmy and Kasie are still at NCIS helping out where they can, and Vance is holding down the fort at headquarters. It’s a bit of a transition period, but they’re all still working to solve crimes, which is what matters most to me as a fan!

The story reaches a critical point when Leon discovers a conspiracy involving CID Agent Dolan Thompson (Matt Cook), who is secretly running an illegal gun smuggling operation. Thompson is working with his boss, CID Director Wayne Rogers (J. Paul Boehmer), former government official Brett Gaines (Jim Klock), and cartel leader El Padre (Gabriel Burrafato). When Leon realizes what’s happening, Thompson shoots him, and Leon dies from the wound.

During a flashback, Vance shockingly realizes he wasn’t wearing a bulletproof vest, meaning he’s actually deceased. The person questioning him turns out to be Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, who is there to help his friend come to terms with death and transition to the afterlife. Actor Adam Campbell portrays a younger version of Ducky in this scene.

As a long-time NCIS fan, I have to say, Vance’s death is a huge shake-up! It really feels like the show is heading in a new direction. NCIS has been dealing with big changes ever since Mark Harmon left, and losing Vance – another original – is a real blow. He’s been running things for almost 20 years, ever since he joined in Season 5, and it’s going to be strange seeing the team navigate things without him.

Leroy Gibbs and Leon Vance have both been incredibly important to the show, but Vance’s recent death feels particularly impactful. With Gibbs still around, and other major character deaths on NCIS having less lasting effects, Vance’s passing marks a truly significant moment for the franchise. However, this also creates a valuable opportunity for another long-time member of the NCIS team to step up.

With Vance leaving, a leadership gap will open at NCIS, and Timothy McGee is the perfect person to fill it. He’s been a part of the show since the beginning, growing from a new agent into a key deputy to both Vance and Parker. Plus, Tim has been ready for a new challenge.

Following Gibbs’ departure to Alaska and the appointment of Alden Parker as team lead, McGee begins to seek new challenges in Season 22 of NCIS. He applies for the position of NCIS Deputy Director, but the role goes to Gabrielle LaRoche, a former Inspector General at the Department of Justice. However, things are about to change…

As NCIS moves into Season 24, a new character will take over after Vance. The show has been subtly preparing for his departure, with Season 21 showing him resolving a decades-long feud with cartel boss Carlos Savina, recovering from a serious gunshot wound, and reconnecting with his son.
