NCIS star Mark Harmon recalls colleague “swooning” over young Gibbs actor
As a dedicated fan of NCIS and Mark Harmon’s iconic portrayal of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, I was thrilled to hear about the upcoming prequel series, NCIS: Origins. The recent revelation of Harmon’s presence during Austin Stowell’s audition for the role of young Gibbs added an exciting layer to my excitement.
NCIS star Mark Harmon has shared an insight into the audition process for NCIS: Origins.
The experienced actor, who portrayed Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the lengthy television show, retired from his role in 2021. Yet, a newer rendition of his cherished character will appear in the upcoming prequel series, “NCIS: Origins,” brought to life by Austin Stowell, known for “The Hating Game.”
I remember, as the executive producer of this prequel, being there when Stowell tried out for the part of young Gibbs for the very first time.
At the Television Critics Association event, he revealed how Gina Lucita Monreal responded to Stowell’s tryout during our production team meeting.
“I teased about Gina being smitten, but to be honest, she was. She might try to downplay it, but she couldn’t hide her feelings. And when Stowell left the room, she couldn’t help but exclaim, ‘Wow, that guy is a real star!'”
Based on my experience as a long-time producer in the entertainment industry, I can tell you that behind every captivating performance lies a complex dynamic between the artist and those involved in bringing their work to life. In this particular instance, it seems executive producer David North found himself utterly enthralled by the star’s mesmerizing presence on set. The debate over who was actually swooning might be semantics, but one thing is certain: the magnetic pull of talent can leave quite an impression on those fortunate enough to witness it firsthand. Having been in similar situations myself, I can attest to the transformative power a charismatic performer holds, leaving even the most stoic among us momentarily bewitched. So let’s give credit where it’s due – somebody swooned, and it might very well have been David North.
The new series, titled “NCIS: Origins,” is scheduled to be released around 12 years prior to “NCIS” and focuses on a younger Gibbs as he starts his career as a special agent at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office. Harmon will serve as both executive producer and narrator for this show.
Harmon expressed satisfaction with taking a supporting role in the new cast, stepping back and letting others take the lead. He’s happy to be involved and contribute from the sidelines.
During this time, Harmon, the actor, was undecided if he would rejoin the main NCIS show. He expressed, “I’m not certain. It’s essentially a matter of feeling that you’ve accomplished something in a part. I’ve consistently allowed the writers to have creative control.”
NCIS: Origins is set to premiere this fall. In the United States, NCIS can be watched on CBS. For viewers in the UK, seasons 1-20 are available for streaming on Disney+.
