NCIS: Origins ratings are in and they're not as good as NCIS: Hawaii

As a dedicated NCIS enthusiast who has been following this franchise since its early days, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the decision to cancel NCIS: Hawaii. The series had just begun to unfold a captivating narrative, particularly with the development of the lesbian couple and the promise of more for Boone’s family and Kate and Lucy’s relationship.

As a devoted fan of “NCIS: Hawaii”, I firmly believed that terminating the series was an error. Comparing the viewership ratings of “NCIS: Origins” to the original, it seems the latter has prevailed.

I have a strong affection for the television series “NCIS: Hawaii“. There are numerous aspects that appeal to me, but I particularly enjoy the authenticity of the characters, and the fact that we’re introduced to a lovely lesbian couple whose story I find myself rooting for. As the show progresses, I eagerly anticipate learning more about Boone’s family, as well as watching Kate and Lucy develop their romantic relationship further. Additionally, there’s an expectation that Ernie might also find love, since there is a suitable partner waiting for him somewhere.

Despite its cancellation, Precinct TV maintains that the decision was based on an absurd rationale. This notion becomes increasingly ludicrous when you take into account the impressive live ratings of NCIS: Origins.

NCIS: Origins live ratings are down from NCIS: Hawaii

As a gamer, I’d say, “I just checked out the numbers for the debut of NCIS: Origins, and it drew in five million viewers and a 0.3 demo rating. That’s slightly lower than what NCIS: Hawaii managed during its third season with 5.2 million viewers and a 0.35 demo rating on the same day.

TVLine notes that last season, NCIS: Hawaii didn’t compete with Monday Night Football, unlike NCIS: Origins. Additionally, the season premiere of NCIS: Hawaii was in the new year instead of fall, which may have affected fair comparison. To consider a fair comparison, let’s look at a season that did air during the same time as Monday Night Football.

As a devoted fan, I’d say if you’re searching for a suitable comparison, give TV Series Finale a glance. For a fitting rival, let’s consider the fall season debut of NCIS: Hawaii, since it squares off well against this series launch. The Season 2 premiere of NCIS: Hawaii boasted an impressive 5.3 million viewers and a 0.4 demo rating. In my view, comparing shows that air around the same time is a more equitable approach to assess their popularity.

We’ll observe how the show NCIS: Origins fares on, particularly when it shifts from a two-hour timeslot to its usual 10 p.m. ET/PT slot. It will be intriguing to find out if CBS repeated the move that some fans of other shows believe was a mistake.

NCIS: Origins airs Mondays at 10/9c on CBS. Catch up the following day on Paramount+.
