Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “The Sound and the Fury” are ahead!
With the Carla Marino arc concluded, NCIS is back to its usual case-of-the-week format. However, the latest episode, “The Sound and the Fury,” wasn’t typical. It featured a chilling case and the return of Special Agent Dale Sayer, and left viewers wondering if there’s a growing connection between Nick Torres and Jessica Knight. Plus, the episode included a heartwarming nod to the fan-favorite Abby Sciuto that sparked a lot of conversation.
There’s No Romantic Interest Between Torres And Knight… Right?
The latest NCIS investigation, “The Sound and the Fury,” brought Torres, Knight, Parker, and McGee together with Dale Sawyer’s team during the night shift. They were both investigating a similar case: a woman disguised as someone else was seducing sailors and then blackmailing them with threats of exposing their affairs. The victim, Petty Officer 3rd Class Steven Keogh, died in a particularly gruesome way – his brain essentially turned to liquid and leaked out through his ears and nose.
Director Vance put Sawyer in charge of the investigation because Sawyer’s bribery case was already being investigated. Sawyer, Torres, and Knight quickly identified Olga Bergamot and found her. They arrived to find one of her accomplices dying in the same way as Keogh. Soon after, Olga began to experience the same symptoms and slipped into a coma. Then, Nick started feeling unwell too, and while Sawyer and Knight were on surveillance, he unexpectedly attacked them in a fit of rage and temporary madness.

In the end, the deaths, coma, and Nick’s strange actions were all caused by a powerful sound device, called an LRAD, used by the owner of a bar Keogh had visited. This man had blackmailed Keogh into stealing the device, intending to sell it at a suspicious party in Russia. As always, the villain was caught and his scheme was stopped, and Torres recovered thanks to the dedicated care of Jimmy Palmer.
Throughout the unfolding events, Torres and Knight revealed their strong feelings for each other in private conversations with Swayer and Jimmy. Torres confessed to some jealousy watching Knight work with Swayer, simply because he values their partnership. Knight, in turn, shared that her feelings for Torres run deeper than he realizes. By the end of the episode, “The Sound and the Fury,” they both made it clear that nothing would come between them.
I still suspect there’s more to the dynamic between these characters that we’ll see play out. Wilmer Valderrama hinted that a relationship between Torres and Knight would be complicated, but he didn’t say it was impossible. They don’t seem to have romantic feelings for each other now, but I think it could happen. Torres’ previous relationship with Ellie Bishop didn’t work out, and while many fans would like to see her return, Torres clearly has a connection with Knight.
One Of Abby Sciuto’s Essentials Made A Cameo
Longtime viewers of NCIS, especially those revisiting the show from the beginning on Paramount+, will fondly remember Pauley Perrette’s character, Abby Sciuto, as one of the original stars. She first appeared in a special episode of JAG that served as a pilot for NCIS. Though Perrette left the show seven years ago, NCIS has continued to acknowledge Abby, such as when she sent a unique black wreath to pay respects after the death of Ducky Mallard.

Watching “The Sound and the Fury,” Dale Swayer surprised everyone by pulling out some old bottles of Caf-Pow. He said he’d found a whole case of it tucked away in the forensics lab years ago. It instantly reminded me of Abby – she practically lived on that stuff when she was working! Nick Torres even mentioned to Jessica Knight that those bottles definitely belonged to Abby, though I don’t think Jessica ever actually met Abby. It was a little detail that really stuck with me, a small piece of her brought back to life.
Now that Pauley Perrette has stopped acting, and considering how her departure from NCIS played out, it’s unlikely her character, Abby Sciuto, will ever return to the show. That’s why it’s enjoyable when NCIS includes small references to Abby, reminding viewers of a beloved time in the show’s history. You can catch new episodes of NCIS live on CBS Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
