NCIS Just Set Up Timothy McGee’s Exit With An Unlikely Villain’s Return
Season 22 of NCIS set the stage for Timothy McGee’s exit from the MCRT, marking a return of an enigmatic antagonist. Although Sean Murray’s character didn’t initially belong to Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ original JAG team, he has become the longest-standing active member of the Navy Yard-based team. Regrettably, his opportunities for a lasting role within NCIS are quite scarce.
Following Gibbs’ retirement at the end of NCIS season 19, it became evident that McGee would be the ideal successor for the MCRT. Given his extensive tenure on the team and his direct mentorship under the revered leader, McGee seemed perfectly poised to step into the void left by Gibbs. However, this didn’t come to pass as Gary Cole’s character, Alden Parker, was instead chosen to take over the position.
As a movie enthusiast, let me say that Parker truly shines as a leader on our favorite show – a far cry from Mark Harmon’s Gibbs. Cole has brought a fresh twist to his character, driving the series forward at an exciting pace. However, this evolution has left Bishop in a bit of a pickle, finding himself without a clear path for the team. Unfortunately, he might find himself forced to move on if he wants to advance further in his career.
McGee’s NCIS Problem Explained
NCIS Doesn’t Know What To Do With McGee
Following Gibbs’ departure, I found myself in a position where the mantle of team leader for MCRT was offered to me. However, at that point in time, I decided against taking up the role. I shared my reasons with Nick Torres, who expressed his disapproval, stating that the responsibilities would keep me away from my family for extended periods and also increase the amount of paperwork I’d have to handle.
At that time, McGee’s decision was clear. He loved being out on the field, something he made evident during NCIS season 22. Yet, as years passed since his initial choice, he began seeking opportunities to advance his career. It eventually came to light that he had applied for the position of NCIS Deputy Director – a role seldom seen in the series.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the intriguing twists and turns of NCIS season 22. Unlike what many might have anticipated, the show didn’t delve deeply into McGee’s audition. In fact, it was early in its run that we learned he didn’t secure the role – instead, it went to DOJ Inspector Gabriel LaRoche.
However, this seemingly minor plot point sparked a captivating year-long arc. McGee, our favorite NCIS team member, became suspicious of his new superior, suspecting him to be a mole within our ranks. The tension and suspense kept us on the edge of our seats as we waited to uncover the truth!
In NCIS season 22, finding a personal purpose for McGee provided him with a sense of direction. This purpose, however, overshadowed the fact that he had limited prospects beyond this role, as LaRoche took the only promotion opportunity available without cutting ties with MCRT. Somehow, it also kept alive the possibility that if his adversary was exposed as corrupt, McGee might still secure the position.
Unfortunately, the final episode of NCIS Season 22 cleared LaRoche, concluding McGee’s long narrative thread without any benefit to him. Moreover, his ongoing issue with no prospects within the MCRT remains unresolved.
Or, in another way:
Regrettably, the finale of NCIS Season 22 vindicated LaRoche, wrapping up McGee’s year-long storyline without any personal gain for him. To add to his woes, his struggle with having no future within the MCRT continues unabated.
Fletcher Voss Is Tim McGee’s Best Option To Leaving MCRT
Voss Has The Perfect Job For McGee
Even though NCIS season 21 had fewer episodes due to the two Hollywood strikes in 2023, it managed to tackle a lot of stories. Noteworthy events included Ducky’s farewell episode, which brought about an unexpected appearance by Michael Weatherly reprising his role as Anthony DiNozzo Jr., and a significant milestone episode for the series.
The milestone 1000th episode of NCIS, titled “A Thousand Yards,” was a heartfelt journey that reminisced about the series’ initial case. The episode was filled with numerous references to the show’s early days, but it also added a twist by introducing an unusual antagonist named Fletcher Voss.
During the gathering, Voss was identified as the CEO of Bandium – the firm that operates the communication application MCRT utilizes. Initially portrayed as a tech genius, it’s worth noting that he can’t actually write code. Notably, his first appearance didn’t reveal much, but in NCIS season 22, episode 13, Voss reappeared and formed an unexpected friendship with McGee.
This fresh bond could be the perfect catalyst for McGee to depart from MCRT. Despite being underestimated at times, it’s essential to remember that McGee is technically gifted. When he initially joined Gibbs’ team, DiNozzo jokingly labeled him as a nerd. However, his expertise in technology was undeniable, and he has contributed significantly to resolving numerous cases with his technical prowess.
Over time, as I delved deeper into my role at NCIS and honed my abilities, particularly with increased fieldwork, there’s a facet of my growth that hasn’t been emphasized in recent times. With the budding bond I share with Voss, I see an opportunity to transition from the MCRT team to Bandium, joining them as their newest recruit. This company could greatly benefit from my expertise. An added advantage is that this new role would still keep me connected to my old one.
NCIS Season 23 Can No Longer Stagnate McGee After A Disappointing Last Few Years
McGee Deserves Better
As we approach the 23rd season of NCIS, an intriguing question arises regarding the future role of character, McGee, on the show. Contrary to some speculations, there’s no suggestion that Sean Murray is considering departing from the series. Given that all original characters have been written off, he plays a significant part in reflecting the long-standing legacy of NCIS.
In summary, it’s important that the show continues without sacrificing character growth. Over the past few years, every character, including Director Vance, has had their own development arc. Upcoming, Parker will have a significant role in NCIS season 23. CBS needs to create an engaging plot for McGees future, whether he stays with MCRT or moves elsewhere.
