Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest 2025: ‘Ketch-up’ on what you need to know
At a typical Fourth of July cookout, many of us may have indulged in an additional hot dog or two. However, it takes a true champion to consume fifty hot dogs in quick succession.
This year, I’ll be heading to Coney Island, N.Y., to witness the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest – a spectacle that gathers the world’s top competitive eaters! Here are some key details about this year’s event:
1. The competition takes place on Independence Day (July 4th).
2. Each participant has 10 minutes to consume as many hot dogs as they can.
3. The winner will be the one who eats the most hot dogs within that time frame.
4. It’s a tradition filled with excitement, food, and a celebration of eating prowess!
Is Joey Chestnut competing?
Joey Chestnut, the record-holder of competitive eating events, will make a comeback to the Coney Island stage this year following a dispute over sponsorship that prevented him from participating in 2024. Last year, Chestnut was prohibited from competing after he signed a deal with Impossible Foods. However, he found an alternative platform to showcase his skills at an event in El Paso, Texas. Eventually, Major League Eating reached an agreement with Chestnut regarding the sponsorship issue, and he expressed gratitude for finding a resolution on social media in June.
Who are the eaters?
In simple terms, Chestnut – currently number one in the nation – is a strong contender to win yet again, holding the Major League Eating record of 76 hot dogs consumed within 10 minutes. Keep an eye on other notable eaters like Patrick Bertoletti, who won in 2024 and ranks second, Geoffrey Esper in third place, James Webb in fourth, and Nick Wehry ranked sixth.
Miki Sudo leads the women’s contest as the current champion, having won for ten consecutive years. Her objective is to surpass her own record of consuming 51 hot dogs, which she achieved in 2024.

In the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating competition, Patrick Bertoletti emerged victorious after devouring an impressive 58 hot dogs. The record holder, Joey Chestnut, was absent from the event.

World & Nation
On Friday at Coney Island, I successfully defended my title as the “mustard-belt” holder of the yearly Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest.
How did the contest come to be?
In the year 1916, utilizing a $300 loan and his wife’s top-secret recipe, Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker established a five-cent hot dog stand. The first hot dog eating competition didn’t take place until 1972.
At first, it started as a playful competition, but over time, it has evolved into a demanding athletic event, recognized by Major League Eating and garnering significant media coverage. To many, this contest symbolizes America’s fascination with spectacle and indulgence. Nathan’s doesn’t shy away from its original aim of self-promotion. On Independence Day each year, hordes of fans gather at Coney Island, with millions more tuning in on ESPN.
So, what’s on the table?
The victor gets the prestigious and jeweled Mustard Belt worth $10,000, along with the respected title of champion.
Happy Fourth of July — it’s time to dig in!
