Natasha Lyonne makes jokes about flight removal at Planned Parenthood gala after blaming sleeping pills

Natasha Lyonne didn’t seem concerned about the recent reports of her being asked to leave a Delta flight as she attended a Planned Parenthood event in New York City on Wednesday.

Last week, 47-year-old actress, known for her role in Euphoria, caused a delay of over an hour on a flight to New York when she was asked to leave the plane due to disruptive behavior.

Witnesses said Lyonne, who had recently admitted to ending her almost ten-year period of sobriety, was asked if she needed medical help. Crew members then reportedly told her the plane wouldn’t leave until she got off.

The event happened shortly after she went to the premiere of Euphoria’s third season.

After the event, Lyonne said she thought she had taken a sleeping pill. She later stated that she was briefly held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On Wednesday, she publicly spoke about the incident, trying to make light of it with some awkward jokes at the Planned Parenthood of Greater New York’s Spring Into Action Gala.

While giving a speech to honor Pink, Lyonne praised her as a true icon. She explained that both she and Pink refuse to be controlled or told how to live their lives – or even when to travel.

After the audience cheered, the Orange Is the New Black star playfully said, ‘I’ve already taken three flights! Take that!’ according to a video shared by People magazine.

She downplayed the incident in an interview with Page Six, responding to their question about how she was doing afterward.

‘Oh, you mean my flight plans? My performance art piece?’ she quipped.

‘It’s been a doozy,’ Lyonne added.

Last Friday, Lyonne used X to share her version of events from the disruptive flight.

Okay, so I admit it – I’m a total planner, and I needed to be rested for my trip! I took a Lunesta right when we were getting ready for takeoff, hoping to sleep through the whole red-eye flight to New York in Delta One. Seriously, Delta One and a good night’s sleep were non-negotiable!

‘Boarded seamlessly with just a backpack and sneakers, eager for a nap.’

She explained that the plan was to arrive feeling refreshed and ready for hair and makeup, as she was scheduled to appear on the @DrewBarrymore show immediately after landing.

I was really hoping to meet Drew and have a meaningful conversation, but unfortunately, Immigration and Customs Enforcement intervened and I was held up. It seems like that’s just how things are going these days.

Lyonne expressed gratitude to fans and airport staff, saying, ‘Thank you for all the support! I’ve always had good experiences with Delta and the TSA, and I’m thinking of the TSA workers who aren’t getting paid right now. [two heart emojis] I’m sorry for any delays travelers experienced.’

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contradicted her story, saying that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had no record of detaining or accompanying the actress.

‘Neither ICE nor TSA escorted or detained Natasha Lyonne,’ a DHS spokesperson told TMZ.

Witnesses said Lyonne seemed disoriented as she was leaving Los Angeles on April 7th, shortly after going to the premiere of Euphoria’s third season in Hollywood.

She eventually arrived in New York City and attended the premiere of the documentary Lorne in the Bronx on Thursday, even walking the red carpet.

This event happened shortly after Lyonne shared that she had recently relapsed after being sober for almost ten years.

Oh my god, you will NOT believe this! Page Six is reporting that Lyonne was actually still dressed in some of her premiere outfit when all the craziness started, and she was flying first class, of course! Can you even imagine? It’s just…so Lyonne! I’m living for this.

After a bit of searching, the staff found her laptop. The plane started moving towards the runway, but then had to return to the gate, where a Delta employee got on board to talk with Lyonne.

According to reports, an employee asked Lyonne, “Are you hurt or do you need a doctor?” and then, “Please exit the aircraft. Can I help you with your bags?”

‘Where are we?’ she was heard asking.

We’re still stuck in Los Angeles. They told us the plane isn’t taking off, and won’t until everyone disembarks.

Page Six reports that Lyonne calmly told a staff member to be quiet before going to the bathroom and returning with a bag of pretzels to eat.

She departed the plane obediently after her luggage was removed.

The captain explained that the delay of over an hour for passengers traveling to New York was caused by a passenger who wasn’t responding to simple instructions.

The captain explained that a passenger was asked to take a different flight because they were unable to follow simple instructions. It seems the passenger was not fit to fly at that time.

We’re so sorry for the trouble, and we’ll get you to New York as soon as we can, while keeping you safe.

This week, the Daily Mail reached out to representatives for Lyonne but hadn’t received a response as of yet. Delta also chose not to make a statement.

She turned heads earlier that night when she arrived on the red carpet wearing a see-through top with no bra, drawing attention to her chest. She was promoting her work on the show Euphoria at the time.

The incident comes three months after she revealed she suffered a relapse.

Natasha Lyonne shared with her 545,000 followers that she had experienced a relapse, and promised to share more details later. Her followers responded with an outpouring of support.

The actress replied to a supportive comment with, ‘Thank you, and I appreciate your kindness.’ She playfully added, ‘Sending you lots of love! Who knows, maybe I’ll become a marijuana enthusiast or a religious sister. We’ll see!’

Lyonne didn’t specify when or how her relapse happened, but she emphasized that getting better is an ongoing, lifelong journey.

In a message posted on Saturday, January 24th, she reminded anyone going through a hard time that they aren’t by themselves.

Feeling thankful for the love in my life and the ability to keep moving forward. I’m doing this for my child, Bambo. Remember to always be true to yourselves, because holding onto hidden things can really weigh you down.

The actress from Orange Is The New Black also shared a message of encouragement: ‘Just in case nobody told you today, I love you. No matter what struggles you’re facing, your experiences can help someone else. Keep pushing forward, everyone. Don’t give up before something amazing happens. Fill your thoughts with love, and don’t pay attention to negativity.’

She sent a simple ‘Love you too’ to one fan, and shared a more candid message with another, saying they needed to improve things and stop blaming people. She jokingly suggested targeting the Sacklers and even luxury items, but added she didn’t want to be criticized for speaking her mind.

She was talking about the Sackler family, famous for owning Purdue Pharma, the company that created the highly addictive painkiller OxyContin. They made billions of dollars from selling the drug.

The company was required to pay $7.4 billion last year as part of a settlement related to the opioid crisis.

In March, she shared a positive update about her recovery, posting on X that she was doing much better and getting back on her feet.

Lyonne finished rehab in 2006 and, in a 2012 interview with Entertainment Weekly, openly discussed her struggles with drug and alcohol addiction and how things went wrong.

She described the frightening experience of falling into addiction. She explained how substances have predictable effects – alcohol slows you down, cocaine speeds you up – and how combining drugs can be incredibly dangerous. Her story, she said, is a warning: mixing cocaine and heroin – a combination known as a speedball – is extremely risky and can have devastating consequences.

It’s hard to put into words,” she explained. “I really came close to dying, and most people in that situation don’t recover. That experience makes me cautious and aware of how lucky I am. I don’t want to seem boastful, because so many people supported me and helped me get back on my feet.

She was heard telling staff after apparently getting startled at one point: ‘Ah! You scared me!’

In the early to mid-2000s, Lyonne faced a series of very public and difficult challenges. She was arrested for drunk driving, involved in a legal dispute with a neighbor, and battled serious health issues including hepatitis C, a collapsed lung, and a heart infection that eventually required open-heart surgery.

At 27 years old, in 2006, she entered a live-in rehabilitation program to get help with substance abuse.

‘Eventually, I made it through those dark nights of the soul,’ Lyonne told The Times in 2024.

Lyonne’s career has experienced a comeback in recent years. Now in her 40s, she’s expanding her work beyond acting to include directing, writing, and producing, like her new boxing film, Bambo, which is set in the 1980s.
