As a longtime fan of music and its power to evoke emotions, I find myself captivated by Natasha Bedingfield‘s journey. Her story is one that resonates with me, as it highlights the resilience and determination required to succeed in the face of underestimation.

Natasha Bedingfield discusses the motivations behind writing her popular song “Unwritten,” and criticizes certain record labels for being too controlling, in an interview for the December issue of FAULT Magazine.

Twenty years ago, the singer, now 43, unveiled a song that received critical acclaim and continues to resonate with listeners. Remarkably, he confessed that this song has grown even more significant for him over the past two decades.

Last year, Unwritten gained significant recognition among younger audiences, particularly following its prominent role in the 2023 film “Anyone But You” starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Subsequently, it rapidly spread throughout TikTok.

As Unwritten’s impact lingered, Natasha shared the delightful backstory behind the song, revealing that it was a heartfelt present she crafted for her dear younger brother, Joshua.

She remembered: ‘At that time, my little brother was 14 years old, while I was engrossed in creating my album. As I had no gift for him, I decided to pen a song instead.’

Twenty years have passed, and the song holds an even deeper significance for me now. I’ve sung it numerous times, and I’ve come to understand that I penned it with you in mind—it’s akin to offering wise counsel to others, only to discover that I’ve followed that advice myself.

The famous singer openly acknowledged that she recognized the song as extraordinary when composing it, further stating: “Occasionally in the recording studio, it seemed as though the skies parted, and a unique inspiration would almost descend upon me.

Natasha expressed that she enjoys the fact that the song has connected with Generation Z over the past year, stating: “It seems like a trip down memory lane. It feels as if it’s been timeless, always resonating with the same age group. The enthusiasm everyone shows when singing along is infectious, and I can’t help but enjoy it and feel the happiness.

Over time, she admitted that her perspectives on the song evolved significantly due to the controlling nature of record companies regarding her public image during the early stages of her career.

Twenty years later, my viewpoint on [Unwritten] has completely changed. For example, during a photo shoot today, I feel like I’m truly letting go of my reservations. I didn’t understand back then just how much record companies could try to control your appearance.

In my previous role, I was encouraged to embody the ‘girl next door’ image, but now I’m thrilled with the increased creative autonomy. This situation continually reminds me that everything, including music, physical appearance, and clothing, can be considered as forms of art. That’s quite fascinating!

Natasha is a member of a well-known musical clan; her elder brother is Daniel Bedingfield, while her younger sibling, Nikita, is also a vocalist.

In the early 2000s, Daniel, now aged 44, saw significant success with his popular songs such as Gotta Get Thru This, If You’re Not the One, and Never Gonna Leave Your Side. These tracks earned him nominations at both the Grammys and BRIT Awards.

As a dedicated fan, I found myself following the remarkable journey of Natasha, who only a few short years after her release, unveiled a triple-platinum debut album. Comparisons to Daniel were inevitable, but instead of intimidating me, they sparked an excitement within me. I reveled in these comparisons rather than being fazed by them.

She expressed: ‘I truly cherish being overlooked. It’s something that has happened often in my journey. People dismiss me with comments like, “She’s only the sister of a remarkable singer,” or they assume, “She’s just this,” or “She’s too young,” or “She’s too old.” I embrace it. I think to myself, “Is that so? That’s intriguing.” I find delight in disproving their assumptions.’

Over the past year, Natasha has been showcased at numerous concerts in both the UK and US following her creative period as a songwriter for other musicians. This recent upsurge in her career has been quite remarkable.

During the summer season, she made an appearance at TRNSMT, Victorious Festival, The Big Feastival (where she collaborated with Becky Hill), and the People’s Choice Awards.

Last month, she graced The Timeless Tour of Meghan Trainor in North America as a special guest, sending her fans into a frenzy with her unexpected appearance at the Capital Summertime Ball.

Regarding her performance, the popular singer jokingly commented: “It’s wonderful to see that my music is connecting with newer and younger generations.

I found immense pleasure in singing these two tunes, and it was a delightful surprise to perform a unique choral version at Capital’s Summertime Ball during the Barclaycard Out of the Blue segment.

When composing my tunes, I often envision a bustling arena or stadium filled with voices harmoniously singing. My aim is to craft melodies that resonate with the crowd, encouraging them to join in the chorus.

This isn’t merely a revival for me, but a return to my roots. It felt extraordinarily meaningful to have my family present as I led the entire crowd in a shared song.
