Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington get into heated debate over obscure Christmas ‘classic’

Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington get into heated debate over obscure Christmas 'classic'

As a devoted fan of Sunrise and a connoisseur of holiday tunes, I must confess that the recent debate between Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington over the status of Mistletoe and Wine as a Christmas classic left me utterly bewildered. Born and raised in the UK, I can attest to the fact that this song was an integral part of our festive soundtrack, topping the charts no less than twelve times! It’s like they were discussing the merits of a national holiday or something equally sacrosanct.

On Friday, the morning show hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington found themselves engaged in a passionate discussion about a supposed holiday favorite.

After I presented a festive segment showcasing a classic video of Brit pop legend Cliff Richard singing Mistletoe and Wine during the holiday season, the debate ensued.

Following her statement that the sweet holiday tune had climbed to number one on the charts back in 1988, Nat confessed that the song was unfamiliar to her at that time.

‘I don’t think I’ve heard of that song in my life,’ she said.

Matt, 46, interrupted: ‘I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk that high before.’

He then insisted to their viewers that the song was ‘still a classic today…get that one on your play list.’

Nat was not prepared to drop the issue and asked: ‘Would you call that a classic though?’

Matt insisted he knew the tune, while news presenter Monique Wright said she had never heard of it.

It’s not really unexpected that the Brekkie Central team found it challenging to categorize the Cliff Richard song as a classic among fans in Australia.

The song never reached higher than 30 on the ARIA charts in 1988.

Simultaneously, it became an immense success in the UK, reaching the top of the charts, marking Richard’s 12th number-one single at that point.

The tune has become familiar to British audiences as well, following its use in a public campaign against drunk driving, particularly during the festive period.

On Thursday morning during her appearance on Sunrise, Nat was taken aback by an unexpected and startling revelation caught live on air.

She was presented with a large holiday gift by co-host Matt, hidden beneath a sheet and bow on a table.

However, upon removing the red velvet cover, Nat shrieked upon discovering that a flexible artist performing acrobatics lay tangled underneath.

The fun kicked off when Matt chuckled, saying playfully, “It seems like it’s about time we find out what’s inside Santa’s bag now.

He then gestured to the red sheet which covered a huge mass that appeared to be a box on a table, saying: ‘Go for it. I can’t be happier about this.’

‘That sounded really weird,’ Nat laughed. ‘I have no idea what this is.’

As she clutched the corners and was about to remove it, Matt advised her to ‘handle it carefully’, making her inquire, “Is anyone underneath?

‘No, what are you talking about?’ Matt said.

However, when Nat yanked away the covering, revealing it indeed was a person contorted into a human pretzel, she let out a startled exclamation: “Good heavens, what on earth is that?!

Matt remarked, “That’s a person,” as the acrobat unfurled himself, preparing to astound everyone with an astonishing demonstration of agility.

‘It’s what?’ Nat cried. ‘Oh my, God. Oh, sugar. Oh wow. Oh my, God. It is a person.’
