NASCAR veteran lands second full-time Cup ride in three years

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the winding tracks of NASCAR, I can confidently say that A.J. Allmendinger’s return to the Cup Series is a thrilling twist in the grand narrative of motorsports. Having followed his career since his days at Road America, it’s heartening to see him back on track with Kaulig Racing.

In the year 2023, A.J. Allmendinger made a comeback to the NASCAR Cup Series as a full-time driver for the first time since 2018. He joined Kaulig Racing and piloted the No. 16 Chevrolet.

As a devoted fan, I must say, despite clinching the playoff race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval last year, Matt Kaulig’s team believes he holds greater potential within our organization in the Xfinity Series come 2024.

42-year-old racer from Los Gatos, California, has participated in multiple Cup Series races this season, as the Charter car number 16 has been shared among various drivers. Additionally, he’s taken select drives for the non-charter No. 13 Chevrolet when the team fielded three entries. Daniel Hemric holds the full-time driving position for the No. 31 Chevrolet.

Although Allmendinger has secured numerous victories across each Xfinity Series season from 2020 to 2023, boasting five wins per season during his two full-time driving years of 2021 and 2022, he hasn’t claimed a win this year. At present, he ranks sixth in the point standings with six races left before the end of the regular season.

A.J. Allmendinger back to NASCAR Cup Series in 2025

Despite being part of a team often viewed as underperforming, his consistent strong finishes in this year’s Cup Series – three sixth places specifically – have earned him a return to a full-time position in the series for 2025. Next year, he will pilot the No. 16 Chevrolet once more.

For AJ Allmendinger, an excellent season in 2025 might feature a win during the regular season to secure him a spot in the postseason. As a three-time winner in the Cup Series, his sole playoff appearance was back in 2014 when he triumphed at Watkins Glen International.

In addition to triumphing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course last year, albeit working on a part-time basis, he missed out on the playoffs. Conversely, in the previous season, he secured a victory during the playoffs, but his status as a part-timer kept him out of the 16-driver postseason group.

The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series calendar has yet to be announced, but for 2024, the playoff plan includes two events on road courses. If Allmendinger qualifies for the postseason next year and the playoffs continue with several road course races, it’s possible that a significant playoff run could still be within reach.
