NASCAR: Two teams scaling back, dropping a car for Richmond race

As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with decades of racing under my belt, I must say the recent expansion and subsequent contraction of teams like Richard Childress Racing (RCR) and Legacy Motor Club has been quite the rollercoaster ride! The Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a thrilling spectacle with an impressive lineup, including Ty Dillon, Austin Dillon, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, John Hunter Nemechek, and Erik Jones.

Over the course of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, both Richard Childress Racing and Legacy Motor Club have increased their teams from two cars to three on multiple occasions. This expansion was particularly noticeable in the latest race held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway three weeks back on a Sunday.

In a return to his grandfather’s NASCAR Cup Series team since 2015, Ty Dillon took the wheel of the No. 33 Chevrolet, sharing the track with his brother Austin and teammate Kyle Busch.

In the 2024 racing season, Jimmie Johnson, a part-owner at Legacy Motor Club, embarked on his sixth outing, piloting the No. 84 Toyota. He was accompanied by his fellow teammates, John Hunter Nemechek and Erik Jones.

Neither team you mentioned is planning to race an additional vehicle during the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway on Sunday night.

RCR, Legacy drop back to two cars for Richmond

Richard Childress Racing intends to run the No. 33 Chevrolet again during this season in at least one more race for Austin Hill, but they haven’t announced any further races or locations yet. Meanwhile, Legacy Motor Club is planning to bring back the No. 84 Toyota for three additional events, with the Kansas Speedway race in September being the next one on the schedule.

As a gamer, I’m pumped to share that the underdog team, MBM Motorsports, who didn’t initially qualify for the Brickyard 400, are gearing up for a comeback at Richmond. The upcoming race will mark a significant milestone for Parker Retzlaff, as he’ll be making his Cup Series debut, steering the No. 66 Ford! Let’s see if they can make a splash in the competition!

The Ford model number 66 has participated in six points races during this season to date, and following this weekend, there are an additional six scheduled appearances on its calendar, beginning with the event at the Daytona International Speedway towards the end of this month.

On Sunday, this car is the sole automobile among those listed for entry in the upcoming 400-lap race at Richmond, Virginia’s four-cornered, 0.75-mile oval. Remarkably, Richmond will be the first track to host two NASCAR Cup Series races during the current season with this event.

At the calendar, The Cook Out 400 occupies the 23rd spot, making it one of the latter events in the 36-race series. Interestingly, this track previously held the seventh race of the season, which took place towards the end of March.

Only 14 races are left on the 2024 racing schedule, and there’s no more free time or off weekends scheduled until the end of the season. Interestingly, ten out of those fourteen races will take place at tracks where events were previously held during the earlier part of the year.

Hey gaming enthusiasts! If you’re looking to switch gears and catch some high-speed action this Sunday, August 11th at 6:00 p.m. ET, the Cook Out 400 is racing live from Richmond Raceway on USA Network.
