NASCAR: Two teams scaling back, dropping a car for Bristol race

As a die-hard NASCAR enthusiast with memories spanning decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I see Juan Pablo Montoya back in action. His return to NASCAR after an eight-year hiatus is like a long-lost friend dropping by for a visit. And AJ Allmendinger, the man behind the wheel of the No. 13 Chevrolet this season, has been a consistent performer, making me reminisce about the good old days when drivers stayed loyal to their teams for more than a race or two.

On a Sunday afternoon, the NASCAR Cup Series race held at Watkins Glen International included two non-permanent entries. These entries were managed by teams that have two permanent drivers on their roster.

2024 saw a repetition of events: For the third occasion, 23XI Racing introduced car number 50 (Toyota), and similarly, for the third time, Kaulig Racing brought out car number 13 (Chevrolet).

Juan Pablo Montoya took control of the No. 50 Toyota for his first NASCAR race since 2014, while A.J. Allmendinger navigated the No. 13 Chevrolet. Noteworthy is that Allmendinger is the sole driver to operate the No. 13 vehicle this year.

23XI, Kaulig scale back at Bristol

For this Saturday’s race finale at Bristol Motor Speedway, both teams – 23XI Racing and Kaulig Racing – will reduce their participation to just their primary entries. This means only the #23 Toyota driven by Bubba Wallace and the #23 Toyota driven by Tyler Reddick for 23XI Racing, along with the #16 Chevrolet for a rotating driver pool and the #31 Chevrolet piloted by Daniel Hemric for Kaulig Racing, will be competing.

After racing with car number 16 Chevrolet for four straight events, Allmendinger will take over from Shane van Gisbergen in this weekend’s 500-lap Bass Pro Shops Night Race at the four-cornered, 0.533-mile (0.858-kilometer) banked racetrack located in Bristol, Tennessee.

This season, Allmendinger has made a team record of nine starts in the No. 16 Chevrolet, in addition to his three starts in the No. 13 Chevrolet.

One more non-charter vehicle remains on the roster for this coming Saturday’s race, specifically the No. 66 Ford fielded by MBM Motorsports. So far this season, Carl Long’s team has participated in eight races, with six different drivers taking turns behind the wheel. This weekend, it will once again be driven by Josh Bilicki, who achieved its best placement of 28th at the Chicago Street Course back in early July.

Given that just 37 vehicles are on the starting roster, the No. 66 Ford has secured its spot in the race.
