NASCAR: Two more car numbers don’t have teams for 2025
As a dedicated NASCAR fan with decades of racing under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as Stewart-Haas Racing prepares for its final lap in 2024. The team has been a staple on the circuit, and seeing it transition into new entities is bittersweet.
It was announced earlier this year that Stewart-Haas Racing plans to close up shop following the conclusion of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season. However, Gene Haas, one of the co-owners, has chosen to keep one of the team’s four charters active for the operation of a new team called Haas Factory Team.
It’s been reported that both Front Row Motorsports and Trackhouse Racing Team have purchased one charter each from the other, fueling speculation that 23XI Racing might acquire the remaining one. Additionally, RFK Racing has been mentioned as a potential buyer.
Haas has plans to keep the #41 tag within his team for the upcoming season. As of now, this number is being piloted by Ryan Preece, who hasn’t secured a ride for 2025 as yet. It appears that Cole Custer, currently driving for Stewart-Haas Racing in the Xfinity Series, will take over from him in the #41 Ford next season.
The team’s other three Cup Series drivers have all found new rides for next year.
As your friendly gaming buddy Josh here, I’m excited to share some news from the world of NASCAR racing. Starting next season, I’ll be hopping into the driver’s seat for Wood Brothers Racing, taking over from Harrison Burton in their No. 21 Ford. Meanwhile, Noah Gragson is gearing up for a fresh challenge with Front Row Motorsports in their brand-new entry. Lastly, my buddy Chase Briscoe is moving on to Joe Gibbs Racing, filling the shoes of Martin Truex Jr., who’s hanging up his racing gloves, behind the wheel of the No. 19 Toyota. Buckle up, it’s going to be a thrilling ride!
As for Stewart-Haas Racing’s car numbers, No. 41 isn’t the only one set to be used in 2025.
As a thrilled gamer, I’m excited to share that next year, I’ll be switching my gaming controller to the No. 10 Chevrolet instead of the No. 31 Chevrolet! Kaulig Racing has secured the rights for this number and is planning to use it in the big leagues. The talented Ty Dillon will be taking over from Daniel Hemric behind the wheel. Interestingly, Kaulig Racing has been cruising with the No. 10 car in the Xfinity Series since 2018. With the opportunity to bring this number up to the Cup Series, it feels like a strategic move that just makes sense.
For the 2025 season, there are two Stewart-Haas Racing numbers that currently don’t have drivers assigned to them: Numbers 4 and 14. Since 2013, no Cup Series season has been held without a car carrying the No. 4, and similarly, no Cup Series season has taken place without a No. 14 car since 1998.
Barring another surprise number change, the 2025 season will likely change that.
Following their acquisition of a charter from Stewart-Haas Racing, Front Row Motorsports will expand their existing two-vehicle team, which includes the No. 34 and No. 38 Fords, by adding the No. 36 Ford to their roster. Meanwhile, Trackhouse Racing Team is also planning an expansion of their current two-car lineup, comprising the No. 1 and No. 99 Chevrolets, with the addition of the No. 88 Chevrolet.
If 23XI Racing decides to field three full-time cars, it’s probable that they will introduce a No. 67 Toyota in addition to the existing No. 23 and No. 45 Toyotas. They have used the No. 50 for their part-time entry on specific occasions since 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of primary sponsor Mobil 1. However, it’s likely that they will switch back to the No. 67 for that car once again.
If RFK Racing decides to field three full-time vehicles in 2024, it’s probable that they will include the No. 60 Ford in their lineup. Currently, they operate both the No. 6 Ford and the No. 17 Ford.
In summary, it’s expected that three new permanent numbers – No. 36, No. 88, and a yet-to-be-determined number for the third buyer of a Stewart-Haas Racing charter – will be added in the 2025 season. On the other hand, numbers 4 and 14 might not run the full 36-race schedule if they choose to leave, while numbers 10 and 41 are expected to remain active.
