NASCAR: The unsung hero who prevented a similar controversy

NASCAR: The unsung hero who prevented a similar controversy

As a die-hard NASCAR fan with over 30 years of trackside experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the sport has seen some wild twists and turns, but the recent disqualification of Alex Bowman at Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval was truly a game-changer. It’s like watching a rollercoaster ride where the tracks get tangled up, sending us all for a loop!

In a surprising move, NASCAR ruled that Alex Bowman from Hendrick Motorsports was disqualified from the Cup Series playoff race held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval on a Sunday afternoon. This race served as the decisive event to determine which eight drivers would progress to the semi-final round of 8 in the 2024 postseason.

Before the penalty was imposed, Bowman had already moved ahead, making the fight for the final spot in the next round a close one between Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing and Joey Logano from Team Penske. In this intense competition, Reddick emerged victorious, while Logano was unfortunately knocked out, marking his initial elimination before the Championship 4 in an even-numbered year.

Until he wasn’t.

After the #48 Chevrolet failed to meet the minimum weight requirement during post-race technical inspection, Bowman lost enough points to fall behind both Reddick and Logano in the round of 12 standings. As a result, Logano moved forward due to this development.

Back in the day, things were different, but starting from 2014, I’ve been following this exciting playoff elimination format. And just a few years ago, in 2019, they brought in a new rule for disqualification that has added another layer of suspense to the game.

For the first time, a disqualification caused a driver to be removed from a playoff round that he believed he had already secured his place in, and instead, a driver previously eliminated was put in his spot.

But NASCAR almost had a similar controversy.

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that Ross Chastain’s daring move, which skyrocketed to the top of SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays on a day usually dominated by NFL action, deserves more recognition than it’s getting in NASCAR circles. This could very well be the understated moment of the decade!

2022 saw Chastain performing an action akin to a video game maneuver during turns three and four at Martinsville Speedway, during the Round of 8 elimination race. By skimming along the track’s wall, he managed to overtake enough vehicles, thereby accumulating sufficient points to qualify for the Championship 4. This, in turn, ousted Denny Hamlin from contention.

The now-banned maneuver, once called the “Hail Melon,” continues to be mentioned and occasionally displayed. There’s not much indication that this practice will stop anytime soon.

But that move was praised for the move itself.

Why it really should have been praised? Brad Keselowski.

After making a strategic pass that overtook five vehicles, including Hamlin’s, Chastain moved ahead and gained a four-point advantage over Hamlin, pushing him into the lead. Prior to this maneuver, Chastain trailed Hamlin by just two points, with Hamlin driving the No. 11 Toyota.

In simpler terms, since he had the advantage in case of a tie with Hamlin, all he needed to achieve on the last lap was overtake two vehicles. However, even though this would have been a considerable challenge at Martinsville on such a short track (0.526 miles), if successful, he could have outranked Hamlin for the fourth and final position in the Championship 4.

After the race, it was discovered that Keselowski’s No. 6 Ford failed to meet the minimum weight requirement during post-race inspection, resulting in him being disqualified from his fourth-place finish.

From a document perspective, dismissing a driver who didn’t make it to the postseason might not have appeared significant at first glance. However, in the end race lineup, both Chastain and Hamlin advanced one position, thereby earning an additional point each.

However, unlike Hamlin, Chastain ended up behind Keselowski during both stages. Consequently, he too accumulated an extra two points.

If not for Chastain’s Hail Melon move, Hamlin would have been eligible for the Championship 4 directly. However, Keselowski’s disqualification resulted in Chastain and Hamlin having an equal number of points at the end of the race. Had it not been for the extraordinary maneuver, Chastain’s performance would have still been enough to snatch Hamlin’s spot in the Championship 4 on a tiebreaker due to better results in previous races.

As a devoted fan, I was on the edge of my seat when Hamlin almost secured a spot in the Championship 4. However, fate took an unexpected turn when another racer was disqualified, moving Hamlin up a place. The excitement was short-lived though, as he was later eliminated from title contention due to the same event.

Due to Chastain’s proactive approach, the controversy never even arose, and Keselowski’s disqualification had no impact whatsoever on the championship battle.

Among the most buzzed-about actions in recent NASCAR Cup Series has served a far more substantial role beyond mere spectacle.

Regrettably, Bowman (and NASCAR) suffered from this instance of disqualification, as it significantly influenced which drivers moved forward in the competition.

Hendrick Motorsports has chosen not to contest their decision after evaluating the situation, which means the driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet will no longer compete in the playoffs. Interestingly, he’s the sole driver among the top eight in total points who won’t be participating in the round of 8, while Logano, currently ranked 15th in points this season, is in a different situation.

Hey there, gaming buddies! Mark your calendars for this upcoming Sunday, October 20th. That’s when the nail-biting round of 8 kicks off, and I wouldn’t want you to miss a single moment of the South Point 400! This adrenaline-pumping race is set to be broadcast live on NBC, straight from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The action starts at 2:30 p.m. ET.
