NASCAR team set for surprise return at Richmond, and with a new driver

As a die-hard NASCAR fan with over three decades of racing passion under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia every time MBM Motorsports makes an appearance on the track. The team’s return to Richmond Raceway for this Sunday’s Cook Out 400 is like a warm hug from an old friend – unexpected yet incredibly welcome.

In the latest NASCAR Cup Series race held three weeks back at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, MBM Motorsports participated for their sixth time during the 2024 season. If you count their appearance in the All-Star Weekend at North Wilkesboro Speedway in May, it was their seventh overall participation of the season.

B.J. McLeod competed for the organization in what was the first true Brickyard 400 since 2020.

Originally, the team owned by Carl Long hadn’t planned to compete with car number 66 in the Cook Out 400 race at Richmond Raceway this Sunday night. However, the car has been listed for entry, and a new driver is expected to take control of it.

MBM Motorsports returning at Richmond

The team is set to come back for the regular season race at Daytona International Speedway on August 24 (Saturday), as well as five playoff races that follow.

They are scheduled to participate in the playoff races at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 21st; Kansas Speedway on Sunday, September 29th; the Roval course at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 13th; Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 20th; and Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, November 10th.

On Sunday, the 400-lap race taking place at Richmond Raceway in Virginia, which wasn’t initially on their schedule, will see Parker Retzlaff making his first appearance in the Cup Series. He’ll be driving the No. 66 Ford in the Cook Out 400 event.

Right now, Retzlaff is racing full time for Jordan Anderson Racing within the Xfinity Series. At this moment, he’s ranked 17th in the points standings, having achieved his best result as a third-place finish in the opening race of the season at Daytona.

Originating from Rhinelander, Wisconsin, the 21-year-old racer is all geared up to represent Beard Motorsports in the approaching Cup Series event at Daytona. However, before he could compete at Daytona, he was obligated to participate in a race that wasn’t held on a superspeedway initially.

Though Retzlaff has been confirmed for this Sunday evening’s race, no drivers have been confirmed by MBM Motorsports for any of the other six races in which they plan to compete this season.

McLeod joins a group of five racers who represent our team in this season’s competitions. This roster additionally features Timmy Hill, David Starr, Chad Finchum, and Josh Bilicki.

Among the five drivers, McLeod is the only one who has raced for Long’s team in not just one but two main events. Additionally, he participated in the Coca-Cola 600 race held at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May.

Hill has attended two events; however, one event was the All-Star Open exhibition race held at North Wilkesboro Speedway in May. Additionally, he raced at Circuit of the Americas back in March.

As a gamer, I can tell you that our team made a comeback with races at Nashville Superspeedway in June and Chicago Street Course in July. These were our first consecutive points race appearances since Hill raced in the final two events of the 2021 schedule at Martinsville Speedway and Phoenix Raceway.
