NASCAR team scaling back, dropping a car for Southern 500

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the highs and lows of NASCAR over the past decades, it’s fascinating to see the dynamic changes unfolding within Richard Childress Racing (RCR). The thrill of seeing new drivers like Austin Hill, Will Brown, and Ty Dillon take on the challenge is unmatched. However, it’s a bittersweet moment as RCR is set to return to their traditional two-car lineup for the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington.

On the sixth occasion of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series, Richard Childress Racing entered an additional vehicle (number three) in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 race held on a Saturday night at the Daytona International Speedway.

I took the wheel of the No. 33 Chevrolet for the thrilling overtime-extended 164-lap race on the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked Daytona Beach, Florida oval this time around. It was my fourth Cup Series race of the season.

Brown had his initial appearance in the Cup Series driving the No. 33 Chevrolet at Sonoma Raceway in June, while Dillon raced for his grandfather’s team in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for his first Cup Series run since 2015 in July.

As a gamer, I’m hyped about this coming Sunday night! Richard Childress Racing is going all-in with their two full-time charter entries. The No. 3 Chevrolet will be piloted by Austin Dillon, and the No. 8 Chevrolet will have Kyle Busch at the wheel. It’s time to buckle up and see them race in the Cook Out Southern 500!

Richard Childress Racing drop back to two cars at Darlington

At present, there are no intentions within the team to enter the No. 33 Chevrolet in any additional races scheduled for 2024.

Additionally, Beard Motorsports, Live Fast Motorsports, and NY Racing Team each brought non-associated vehicles to Daytona. Beard Motorsports ran Parker Retzlaff in the No. 62 Chevrolet, Live Fast Motorsports put B.J. McLeod behind the wheel of the No. 78 Chevrolet, and Joey Gase drove the No. 44 Chevrolet for NY Racing Team.

It seems that none of them intend to participate in the upcoming 366-lap race on Sunday, which takes place on a four-cornered, approximately 2.198-kilometer long, egg-shaped track located in Darlington, South Carolina.

Nevertheless, there remains a single non-race charter car on the roster for this event. MBM Motorsports will be running the No. 66 Ford for the eighth occasion this season and making its comeback since the race at Richmond Raceway three weeks prior, with Timmy Hill behind the wheel.

Since his last Cup Series points race at Circuit of the Americas in March, Hill has not participated in any points races, but he did take part in the non-points All-Star Open exhibition event organized by Carl Long’s team at North Wilkesboro Speedway in May.
