NASCAR team rebrands, gets a new name for the 2025 season
As a die-hard NASCAR fan with decades of racing history under my belt, I must say, the rebranding of JTG Daugherty Racing to HYAK Motorsports has me both excited and nostalgic. The change is reminiscent of the dynamic shifts in team names we’ve seen over the years – from Roush Fenway to RFK Racing, Petty GMS to Legacy Motor Club, and now this. It’s like a game of musical chairs where seats are changing but the rhythm never stops.
For the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series, JTG Daugherty Racing has decided to rebrand and will now be known as HYAK Motorsports, reflecting a shift in ownership from their previous setup, which included winning last year’s Daytona 500.
The team’s name change, announced after it was disclosed that Kroger, a long-term primary sponsor, was departing to partner with RFK Racing instead, occurred a year following Gordon Smith taking over as the new team owner. The original owners, Tad and Jodi Geschickter, parted ways with the team at the end of the 2023 season.
In the Pacific Northwest, the term “HYAK” translates to “quick” or “fast” within the Chinook Jargon, a versatile language used for trade that combines words from Chinook, Chehalis, and various other indigenous languages in the region.
Team name changes, but Ricky Stenhouse Jr. returns
The team intends to continue fielding a single car, specifically the No. 47 Chevrolet, and they retain the necessary authorization for this purpose. For the upcoming season, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., winner of the 2023 Daytona 500, will be returning for his sixth tenure with the team, following his triumph at Talladega Superspeedway in October.
During the 2024 season’s early stages, Stenhouse agreed to an extended multi-year contract that will keep him playing until at least the year 2026.
Smith’s team is co-owned by Brad Daugherty, Mark Hughes and Ernie Cope.
The change is the latest of a number of Cup Series team rebrands in recent seasons.
In simpler terms, the racing team known as Roush Fenway Racing became RFK Racing when Brad Keselowski joined and took part ownership in 2022. Similarly, Petty GMS Motorsports was previously called Richard Petty Motorsports but changed its name after merging with GMS Racing in 2022. Later, Jimmie Johnson joined as a co-owner in 2023.
After the 2024 season, Stewart-Haas Racing, which officially closed down, will continue in some form, as co-owner Gene Haas decided to keep one of the organization’s four licenses and establish a new team called Haas Factory Racing starting in 2025.
The upcoming NASCAR Cup Series season in 2025 commences with the 67th edition of the Daytona 500, airing live on Fox from the Daytona International Speedway starting at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, February 16.
