NASCAR team not competing at Martinsville, 2024 return questionable
As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the thrilling world of virtual racing, I can say with confidence that following the real-life NASCAR action is just as exhilarating. The rollercoaster ride that is the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season has been a fascinating spectacle, and the story of NY Racing Team is one that resonates deeply.
On the previous Sunday afternoon, the NY Racing Team competed in their eighth event (making it the ninth if we count the Daytona 500 where they didn’t qualify) during the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. For the seventh time this season, J.J. Yeley was driving the No. 44 Chevrolet for the team.
As a racing enthusiast, I’m bummed to share that my favorite No. 44 car won’t be joining the fray for the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway this coming Sunday afternoon. It’s the second-to-last race of the season, and I was looking forward to seeing it compete!
Among the vehicles entered for the upcoming 500-lap race on Ridgeway, Virginia’s 0.847-kilometer, four-corner oval track, only one unlicensed car stands out – the No. 66 Ford from MBM Motorsports. This race will be their 12th of the season and marks Josh Bilicki’s fourth time driving it.
Whether or not NY Racing Team return for the season finale at Phoenix Raceway remains to be seen.
Despite their absence during the entire 2023 season, seeing them race again in certain events throughout the 2024 season was a pleasant surprise. Notably, Joey Gase’s 20th place finish at Daytona International Speedway in August equaled the team’s best-ever result. Similarly, Greg Biffle achieved a 20th place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the previous year (2022).
2022 marked their initial return to the Cup Series, having last participated in a full campaign back in 2018. Their previous race was the culmination of their activity from the tail-end of the 2015 season until the start of 2022.
Since 2015, the team hasn’t raced a car at Phoenix, an instance being Travis Kvapil’s unsuccessful qualification attempt that year. In fact, they haven’t participated in races at the 1.022-mile (1.645-kilometer) Avondale, Arizona oval since 2013. Scott Riggs was the driver during their second ever Cup Series race there, which was a reprise of their debut at Phoenix the year prior, with David Reutimann driving.
Since Phoenix is where Yeley hails from, it wouldn’t be unexpected for them to drive the No. 44 Chevrolet one more time in 2024 during the upcoming race, given they are skipping the Martinsville race this weekend.
Tune into NBC at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time this coming Sunday, November 3, for a live telecast of the Xfinity 500 from Martinsville Speedway. Consider subscribing to FuboTV for a free trial so you won’t miss out on the final race before the championship in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season!
