NASCAR: Surprise driver change contradicts previous commitment
As a long-time NASCAR enthusiast with decades of watching drivers come and go, I must admit that I find myself both intrigued and perplexed by this latest driver swap between Rick Ware Racing and Spire Motorsports. On one hand, it’s exciting to see Corey LaJoie getting a fresh start and the opportunity to search for that elusive first Cup Series win, especially as he reconnects with Ford. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment upon hearing Haley’s apparent change of heart regarding his loyalty to Rick Ware Racing.
The excitement surrounding NASCAR’s ‘silly season’ is still running high. Recently, Rick Ware Racing and Spire Motorsports have decided to exchange drivers.
In a rare in-season move, Corey LaJoie is set to move from the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet to the No. 51 Rick Ware Racing Ford, starting this weekend at Kansas Speedway. In return, Haley is set to leave the No. 51 Ford to pilot the No. 7 Chevrolet.
32-year-old LaJoie finds a new beginning, leaving Spire Motorsports after 2021. Now, he has another chance to secure his initial Cup Series victory. Furthermore, he’s returning to Ford, having last raced for them in 2020 while with Go Fas Racing.
Haley, who is now 25 years old, is planning to rejoin the team where he initially competed in the Cup Series back in 2019. For this team, he drove the No. 77 Chevrolet on a part-time basis from 2019 until 2021. In his third career race with them at Daytona International Superspeedway, he secured their very first victory. Now, there’s an opportunity for him to bring the team back to victory lane once more.
However, this news contradicts what Haley had to say earlier this season.
When asked about rumors of him potentially switching to a more prominent team like RFK Racing, Haley firmly expressed his allegiance towards Rick Ware Racing. He mentioned that he’d race with the team for as long as Rick Ware desired his services.
Looking back, neither Haley nor I with Rick Ware Racing could have foreseen that LaJoie’s position – and LaJoie himself – might become vacant. However, after making our initial commitment, it seemed beneficial for both teams and drivers to embrace a fresh environment, which we believed would be advantageous for everyone.
Now, fans find themselves grappling with a significant conundrum regarding statements. Just a short while back, Haley vowed allegiance to Rick Ware Racing. This suggests that we should view some driver declarations during the off-season period with a bit of skepticism.
During the press conference regarding the team move, it appeared that an employee from Rick Ware Racing was emphasizing Haley’s role in the decision-making process more so than the team’s role. However, it should be noted that Haley himself did not forcibly leave the team.
It turns out that LaJoie was planning to depart from Spire Motorsports at the end of the 2024 season, but now he’s leaving seven races ahead of schedule. This early exit ensures Haley will be a permanent member of their three-car team lineup for the 2025 season as well.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but hope for Rick Ware Racing’s success with LaJoie at the wheel. However, the present moment seems to bring more uncertainty than stability to a team aiming for a consistent presence in the No. 51 Ford. Despite Haley’s impressive individual season statistics, which have set new records for the team, it remains unclear what lies ahead for LaJoie in 2025.
