NASCAR: Several drivers set to miss the 2025 Daytona 500

As a seasoned NASCAR fan with over two decades of racing under my belt, I can confidently say that the excitement for the upcoming Daytona 500 is reaching new heights! The charter system ensures that 36 teams are set, but the four open spots have always been a hot topic in this sport.

The prospect of seeing as many as ten teams vying for those coveted positions brings back memories of my early days watching the race, when every driver dreamed of qualifying for the “Great American Race.” The list of potential contenders includes familiar names like Jimmie Johnson and Helio Castroneves, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the already intense competition.

I remember the nail-biting moments during qualifying, hoping that my favorite driver would make it in, and the adrenaline rush when they did. The unique qualifying process, where drivers can lock in based on speed or results from the Duel races, always kept me on the edge of my seat.

With Daytona 500 qualifying scheduled just over a month away, I’m already counting down the days. And to lighten the mood, let me share a little joke: They say that in NASCAR, you can never have too many sponsors – unless you’re stuck in traffic on pit road!

For the NASCAR Cup Series, the maximum number of participating cars is 40 each weekend, with 36 slots guaranteed through the charter system. Currently, it seems this fixed number of 36 will continue in 2025, as a result of recent decisions supporting three-team organizations like 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, which previously showed signs of being required to compete without charters next year.

In each race, there are typically only four empty spots available. This isn’t an issue for teams aiming to participate, as there often aren’t many more than four cars on the list. However, due to its appeal for both part-time and full-time teams looking to expand their entries, the Daytona 500 is always a popular event.

Currently, it’s known that there are three teams aiming to compete in the 67th edition of the “Great American Race”, which takes place in February. These teams are yet to have chartered cars for the event.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that B.J. McLeod, my team co-owner, will be racing with three distinctive vehicles this season! MBM Motorsports is gearing up to drive the No. 66 Ford, while NY Racing Team prepares for the No. 44 Chevrolet, and Live Fast Motorsports gets ready with the No. 78 Chevrolet. The diversity of these rides promises an electrifying season ahead!

More Daytona 500 entries on the way; all open teams at risk

As we’re just over a month away from two more chances to join, it seems increasingly probable that I, along with possibly several others, might find ourselves watching from the sidelines once again.

According to reports by Jayski, up to ten vehicles might compete for just four available spots. This means that a total of 46 cars could potentially be on the roster, exceeding the usual 40-car limit for the upcoming event.

As a gamer, I’m hyped! It seems the Legacy Motor Club is set to bring back their No. 84 Toyota, with co-owner Jimmie Johnson behind the wheel again. Plus, Beard Motorsports will return with the No. 62 Chevrolet. If these are the only additions, it’s clear that someone might miss out on qualifying.

Among the remaining five possibilities are:

1. The No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet
2. The No. 15 Rick Ware Racing Ford, which was a chartered entry in previous seasons
3. The No. 50 Team AmeriVet Chevrolet
4. A Toyota entry yet to be determined for Martin Truex Jr.
5. An entry for four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, who has frequently expressed interest in participating in the Daytona 500.

In Daytona 500 qualifying, two drivers secure their spots through a fast solo run and another pair based on their performance in the preliminary Duel races. If a driver manages to qualify twice, the next quickest driver from the single-car session gets in, regardless of whether they initially qualified through speed or not.

2025’s Daytona 500 qualifying rounds are set for Wednesday, February 12. The Bluegreen Vacations Duel races will occur the next day, Thursday, February 13, at 7:00 PM Eastern Time and will be broadcast on Fox. Lastly, the main event, the 67th annual “Great American Race”, is planned for Sunday, February 16, also starting at 2:30 PM ET and airing on Fox.
