NASCAR removes driver from the 2025 Daytona 500 entry list

Just now, MBM Motorsports declared that Mike Wallace plans to strive for a spot in the 67th Daytona 500, which will take place at Daytona International Speedway. Consequently, the No. 66 Ford has been included on the preliminary entry list.

Since 2020, the team owned by Carl Long hasn’t participated in the “Great American Race” at the Daytona Beach, Florida oval with its four turns and 2.5 miles (4.023 kilometers), high-banked track. In 2021 and 2022, they tried to qualify but were unsuccessful on both attempts. Unfortunately, the team did not participate in either 2023 or 2024 races.

Currently, Wallace is 65 years old and hasn’t participated in a NASCAR Cup Series race since the 2015 Daytona 500. His goal was to be the first driver to compete in five distinct generations of NASCAR Cup Series vehicles. To achieve this, he had to secure a spot in the race through either his speed during solo qualifying or by finishing well in one of the two Bluegreen Vacations Duel races.

Now he won’t even get the chance to try, at least not this year.

Because he hasn’t competed in significant motor racing events recently, NASCAR has decided that Wallace won’t be able to race at the “World Center of Racing” next month. This leaves MBM Motorsports scrambling to find a replacement driver for the No. 66 Ford.

As a gamer, I’m not certain if MBM Motorsports will make it onto the starting grid just yet. With Speedweeks kicking off in less than a month, they’re on the hunt for a driver with the ability to secure sponsorship to cover their entry fee.

It’s important to note that with around ten non-qualified (open) cars competing for the remaining four spots in the Daytona 500, MBM Motorsports already have a challenging task just making it into the race. Adding to this difficulty is the task of securing a new driver and a significant sponsor for a race they might not even be able to participate in, which could prove to be quite tricky.

As a gamer, I know my team isn’t exactly speedy, so it’s clear we won’t be among the first two to secure a spot based on speed alone. That means our new driver’s going to have to fight tooth and nail just to make it in through one of the qualifying races, which is no easy feat with so many other skilled contenders battling for those final two slots in this tough competition.

The Daytona 500 qualifying session for individual cars has been set for Wednesday, the 12th of February. Meanwhile, the Bluegreen Vacations Duel races are slated for the following day, Thursday, the 13th of February (7:00 p.m. ET on Fox). Lastly, the much-anticipated “Great American Race” is due on Sunday, the 16th of February (2:30 p.m. ET on Fox).
