NASCAR: Possible Martin Truex Jr. landing spot ruled out for 2025?
As a die-hard NASCAR fan with decades of racing under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and excitement upon hearing about Martin Truex Jr.’s plans to compete in the 2025 Daytona 500. Having watched him climb his way up from the ranks, it’s incredible to see him continuing his love for the sport even after retiring from full-time competition.
Martin Truex Jr. decided to step down from full-time participation in the NASCAR Cup Series at the end of the 2024 season, however, he emphasized that he intends to keep racing in the sport occasionally, even at the top-tier Cup Series level.
He plans to compete in the 2025 season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, a race he has yet to win in 20 previous attempts.
It’s confirmed that Cole Pearn will take on the role of crew chief for the team, although the specific members haven’t been disclosed yet.
In 2017, this duo clinched a championship while racing under Furniture Row Racing, an organization linked to Joe Gibbs Racing that closed down after the 2018 season. The closure led Truex to join Joe Gibbs’ team, and Pearn accompanied him for the 2019 season. Over a span of five years, they achieved four appearances in the Championship 4 and won 24 races together.
Truex to 23XI not an option?
Initially, it was speculated that Truex might compete in the 2025 Daytona 500 driving a fourth car for 23XI Racing. This move could keep him under the Toyota banner and affiliated with a Joe Gibbs Racing-linked team.
Despite Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan’s team planning to increase their full-time entries to three for the 2025 season with the addition of Riley Herbst, along with Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace, it seems they do not intend to add a fourth car for the 67th annual “Great American Race”, as reported by Sportsnaut.
Truex mentioned that Joe Gibbs Racing, the team he’s been with for six seasons during his full-time career, is responsible for managing his deal and finding a car for him. However, due to the rule that prevents teams from entering more than four cars in any given race, they are unable to field an additional car for the event themselves.
In theory, the team might collaborate with another organization to secure Truex in a car. However, Legacy Motor Club, who previously declined a technical partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing upon switching from Chevrolet to Toyota last season, is the sole other Toyota team in the series.
Legacy Motor Club is rumored to field three cars in the Daytona 500 next year, with John Hunter Nemechek, Erik Jones, and possibly team co-owner Jimmie Johnson driving one each. It’s uncertain if they will also add a fourth car, which would be their second without a guaranteed starting spot.
In the midst of a legal dispute over antitrust issues between 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports not agreeing to NASCAR’s new charter deal, it appears that the sport may move forward with only 30 teams instead of the regular 36. Consequently, during races like Daytona, there could potentially be ten open starting positions rather than the usual four, since the maximum field size remains at 40 cars.
Regardless of whether NASCAR acknowledges the two unrecognized charters from Stewart-Haas Racing, now under 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, even if they are accounted for, there would still be eight vacant positions in the field, which is double the usual number.
On the 16th of February, 2025, the thrilling Daytona 500 race will occur, and you can catch all the action live on Fox, starting at 2:30 PM Eastern Time, directly from Daytona International Speedway.
