NASCAR: One driver has already qualified for the Clash
The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season is tentatively set to kick off on Sunday, February 2nd, starting with the pre-season Cook Out Clash exhibition event at Bowman Gray Stadium. This will be the stadium’s first NASCAR Cup Series race since 1971.
23 racers will take part in this weekend’s 200-lap race at the 0.25-mile Winston-Salem, North Carolina track, which features four turns. The event is scheduled for Sunday night.
Before the four 25-lap qualifying heats on Saturday evening and the 75-lap final qualifier on Sunday night, one of them had already been decided or chosen in advance.
Team Penske’s Joey Logano is locked into this year’s Clash.
In each heat race, it’s expected that the top five competitors will advance to the main event. The starting positions for these races are decided based on practice times, and since there are four such races, the fastest five drivers from each secure a spot in the final competition, making up a total of 20 participants.
Any driver who doesn’t make it through the initial heats needs to participate in the Final Qualifying Race (Last Chance Qualifier). The first and second-place finishers from this race then move on to the main event, resulting in a total of 22 drivers advancing.
In simple terms, the 23rd position for the upcoming racing series in 2024 is reserved for the driver who scored the highest points among those who haven’t secured a spot yet, as Joey Logano, the winner of last year’s championship, is already guaranteed a place due to his victory.
If Logano manages to secure a spot through a heat race or the Last Chance Qualifier, Blaney will automatically qualify as well, thanks to his second-place points finish in 2024. In the same scenario, if both Logano and Blaney secure spots, William Byron from Hendrick Motorsports would also lock in, given his third-place points finish the previous year.
Beginning at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, February 1, Fox Sports 1 will broadcast live the heat races from Bowman Gray Stadium. Additionally, catch the Last Chance Qualifier starting at 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 2, and the Cook Out Clash later in the evening at 8:00 p.m. ET.
