NASCAR: Multiple drivers will miss the 2025 Daytona 500
43 cars have been added to the registration list for the 2025 Daytona 500, the inaugural race of the NASCAR Cup Series season, taking place at Daytona International Speedway. The list is expanding.
36 chartered vehicles will be part of the starting grid consisting of 40 cars for this 200-lap race on the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Daytona Beach, Florida oval, while 7 unchartered (open) cars are competing to fill the remaining 4 open positions.
Seven vehicles in this race are not affiliated with any recognized racing charter:
1. The JR Motorsports Chevrolet driven by Justin Allgaier (No. 40)
2. The NY Racing Team’s car, driven by J.J. Yeley (No. 44)
3. Martin Truex Jr.’s Tricon Garage Toyota (No. 56)
4. Anthony Alfredo’s Beard Motorsports Chevrolet (No. 62)
5. B.J. McLeod’s Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet (No. 78)
6. Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club Toyota (No. 84)
7. The Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet driven by Helio Castroneves (No. 91)
Additional non-chartered cars are still expected to be added.
It is anticipated that Rick Ware Racing will join with a Ford vehicle (No. 15), while Garage 66 (previously MBM Motorsports) had initially planned to bring out a Ford (No. 66). However, NASCAR decided that Mike Wallace was ineligible to drive it. Other potential entries could be the No. 33 Chevrolet from Richard Childress Racing or the No. 50 Team AmeriVet Chevrolet.
Consequently, it might involve a competition among seven to eleven vehicles for the available four (or possibly five, as we’ll delve into later) positions.
In the single-car qualifying round and the two Bluegreen Vacations Duel races, the quickest drivers (those using open cars) automatically secure their places, as do the top performers (again, with open cars) in each race. If someone manages to “lock in” twice, then the next swiftest driver from the single-car session will be granted a spot instead.
Instead of having only the typical four open entries in the racing field, there could be five due to a “world-class driver” provisional being granted to Castroneves. If Castroneves decides to take one of these open spots, the total number of cars will stay at 40. However, if he declines, the field size will increase to 41 cars, as he would still be eligible to race.
In 2025, there will be numerous drivers striving to participate in the “Great American Race,” but regrettably, not all of them will succeed in qualifying for it.
The one-time qualifying race for the 67th annual Daytona 500 is set for Wednesday, February 12. Following this, two Bluegreen Vacations Duel races will be held on Thursday, February 13. Coverage for these events will air live on Fox starting at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Lastly, Fox will broadcast the Daytona 500 itself, beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 16.
