NASCAR: Jimmie Johnson decision clears up some confusion

As a seasoned gamer of NASCAR races, with years of memories etched into my racing chair from the roaring engines to the heart-stopping moments, I can’t hide my excitement for Jimmie Johnson‘s swan song at Phoenix Raceway! The seven-time champion is gearing up for his final race in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, and this time around, he’ll be driving his own No. 84 Toyota for Legacy Motor Club.

Jimmie Johnson will participate in his ninth and final race of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season this coming Sunday afternoon at the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway, despite speculation that his new position at NBC Sports might prevent him from actually taking part in the event.

In the upcoming 312-lap race on the 1.022-mile (1.645-kilometer) Avondale, Arizona oval track, Johnson, a partner at Legacy Motor Club, will be manning the wheel of car number 84 for his team.

In May, Johnson became a part of NBC’s broadcast team for the 108th Indy 500 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Moreover, it was disclosed that he would also contribute to the coverage of the Cup Series events taking place at Daytona International Speedway in August, Talladega Superspeedway in October, and Phoenix this coming weekend.

Jimmie Johnson to compete at Phoenix

Despite his media responsibilities with NBC Sports, he hasn’t given up driving race cars at Phoenix. This is because the #84 vehicle is among the four unchartered cars that have entered the race.

Originally, three unregistered vehicles were slated for this race: the No. 84 Toyota, the No. 44 NY Racing Team Chevrolet driven by J.J. Yeley, and the No. 66 MBM Motorsports Ford with Chad Finchum behind the wheel. Additionally, Team AmeriVet has included the No. 50 Chevrolet, to be driven by Jeb Burton.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that Johnson’s second part-time season with the team he joined as an owner prior to the 2023 season has been challenging. Our transition to Toyota hasn’t been seamless, and it’s shown in our performance so far. My heart skips a beat when I see his best finishes this year – a 28th place at Daytona in February, Dover Motor Speedway in April, and Las Vegas Motor Speedway in October – as I cheer him on. It’s not the success we hoped for, but the journey continues.

As of now, his 2025 itinerary remains undecided. For the upcoming season, both full-time drivers – John Hunter Nemechek in the #42 Toyota and Erik Jones in the #43 Toyota – have been confirmed for a return.

Beginning this Sunday, November 10, at 3:00 p.m. ET, you can catch live coverage of the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway on NBC. Why not sign up for a free trial of FuboTV today to ensure you don’t miss out on all the action?
