NASCAR: Indianapolis restores 27-year tradition that ended four years ago
As a dedicated NASCAR fan with years of experience following the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the announcement that the traditional oval race will make its triumphant return in 2024. For me, there’s nothing quite like the excitement and nostalgia of watching the crown jewel event unfold on the historic four-turn, 2.5-mile oval.
At Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is famously known as the home of the Indy 500, NASCAR introduced its own yearly tradition in the 1990s – the Brickyard 400.
Starting in 1994, a race with 160 laps took place annually at the Indianapolis Speedway, a four-turn track spanning 2.5 miles (or 4.023 kilometers). However, after the year 2020, this routine was disrupted.
Starting from the year 2021, NASCAR made a change to use the interior road course at the venue instead of the oval for their races. This road course features 13 turns and spans over 2.439 miles or 3.925 kilometers. The NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and NTT IndyCar Series all held their events on this track during the same weekend.
NASCAR reverts back to Indy tradition
After three years of holding the race on the road course, it was announced that the classic Brickyard 400 would return in 2024. This will be the first time the prestigious event is run since 2020, and the first time with fans in attendance since 2019 due to crowd limitations enforced since then.
More recently, Kevin Harvick, now a commentator for Fox during Cup Series races, claimed victory at the Brickyard 400 in both 2019 and 2020.
More recently, Brad Keselowski emerged victorious among past champions, securing his win in the year 2018. Presently, though, he races for RFK Racing – a change from his previous tenure with Team Penske.
Only Jimmie Johnson, a four-time victor, and Kyle Busch, a two-time champion in the Brickyard 400, are currently racing actively among past winners. None of the other previous champions are representing the teams they previously brought victory to.
Johnson and Busch have triumphed in the Brickyard 400 races; they previously raced for Legacy Motor Club and Richard Childress Racing but had previously achieved victories with Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing, respectively.
In the years 2021, 2022, and 2023 respectively, A.J. Allmendinger, Tyler Reddick, and Michael McDowell emerged victorious in the road course races.
