NASCAR: Full qualifying order revealed for Phoenix championship

As a hardcore NASCAR fan with over two decades of following this thrilling sport under my belt, I can confidently say that the build-up to the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway is electrifying! From the intense battles on the track to the nail-biting tension during qualifying sessions, every moment leading up to this season finale is a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

Once again in 2024, Phoenix Raceway will crown the NASCAR Cup Series champion for the fifth consecutive year. This select group of four drivers, known as the Championship 4, was finalized during last Sunday’s elimination race at Martinsville Speedway.

The driver who completes Sunday afternoon’s 312-lap NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race on the 1.022-mile (1.645-kilometer), four-turn track in Avondale, Arizona will be named the series champion.

The four competitors include Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano from Team Penske, Tyler Reddick representing 23XI Racing, and William Byron of Hendrick Motorsports.

Since the Championship 4 format began in 2014, the driver who won the final race of this group has also claimed the overall championship title. However, an exception occurred last year when Ross Chastain from Trackhouse Racing Team triumphed in the season finale, even though he had been eliminated earlier. It was actually Chris Blaney who secured the championship as the runner-up.

For this coming Sunday’s race, a practice session will be held with only one car on the track to establish the starting order. Drivers are grouped into two teams, and their positions within those groups, as well as the order of qualifying, are determined by a specific formula that NASCAR has employed since 2020. The intricacies of this system can be found in further detail here.

The Championship 4 drivers weren’t considered in the calculation until all other drivers had been placed, thus guaranteeing that they would qualify from their individual groups, and ultimately having two drivers per group at the end.

As a racing enthusiast, I’m excited about the twist in the qualifying rounds for the upcoming event. Unlike our race at Phoenix in March, this time around, the second round will be structured based on groups rather than just a straight competition. This change, which took effect in June, adds an interesting layer to the competition, making it even more intriguing!
